UMvC3 Costume Inspiration Blog – DANTE

Sep 23, 2011 // Ryan

Your intrepid reporter is still recovering from an awesome time at the LA Fight Club last night , but the Costume Inspiration blogs roll on! This week we’re featuring Dante, everybody’s favorite favorite demon-hunter. Seeing Dante in a fighting game was one of the most exciting parts of the MvC3 project, since the character translates so well to the genre.

Of course, Dante has had a few tweaks to his outfit over the years and some in-game alternates, but he’s stuck pretty close to his traditional red color scheme. The particular look we have in MvC3 was influenced heavily by the DMC3 look, which is pretty reflective of Dante as a whole. When we started designing alternate colors for Dante, the focus was of course on creating visually distinct looks to ensure gameplay was clear. From there, we wanted to keep in mind that Dante is a beloved character, but find interesting ways do display him that are true to his unique style.

First, a basic tweak: a black outfit. If Dante couldn’t wear his trademark red coat, black would probably be his second choice. For someone with as dark a history as Dante has, the literal dark look makes sense. There are more than a few Blade fans in our team, and this lets them play out those fantasies. One hunts vampires and the other hunts demons, but the choice of weaponry is surprisingly consistent.

Dante’s second color alternate is also a creation of our imagination. In this case, we’ve translated Dante’s distinct style to a different color palette altogether: white and light blue. We’ve added white alternates for a lot of the cast in UMvC3, so please incorporate Dante into your white color-schemes! The rest of the images all have pictures, so I put Moon Knight on here. It seemed appropriate, but don’t go complaining that this doesn’t look enough like Moon Knight; it wasn’t supposed to.

Speaking of Camo, Dante’s third alternate color also stays the same from MvC3. Because Dante uses guns (and rockets) so frequently, the camo was a nice way to differentiate him from Vergil. Vergil would never wear camo, but this is why Dante is the demon-hunter of the people. With Haggar picking up his camo for UMvC3, will you be able to piece together a full camo squad?

Dante’s first new color scheme for UMvC3 is meant to be part of an orange team that we’ll unveil more fully next week.  For now, it’s a Dante’s attempt to gain entrance into the Frightful Four. It’ll work well for Halloween next month.

Finally, something that was often asked for before we put Vergil in the game: a Vergil outfit for Dante.  We went above and beyond and put Vergil in the game, but just to show we listen to fans, here it is.  We heard you liked Vergil, so we put a Vergil in your Dante so you can Vergil while you Dante. Enjoy!

That’s it for this week.  Check back next week as we continue our series, or hit up Marvel.com RIGHT NOW for Iron Man !
