Has the newest update tweaked cannons?

My friend and I have been playing the PS3 version of the game for months. We loved it because we would win 95% of the time online. After installing the newest update, we lose almost every match.

Does anyone know what changes were made in the game? Or do you notice that you win more often now?

Example:

A non-upgraded ship regenerating next to town vs enemy ship with 1 cannon upgrade.
Before the update, the non-upgraded ship would usually win. Not anymore.
