Game Informer Bionic Commando review... Uh oh

Thursday, May 14, 2009, 03:43 PM CST [General]

Concept: Swing your way through this follow up to the 1988 NES classic.
Graphcs: An impressive array of background environments and fine details make the game look great.
Sound: A strong musical score and consistent voice work.
Playability: An extremely challenging and frequently clumsy control mechanic drastically hurts the experience.
Entertainment: A fun idea, but too many thisgs go wrong in the execution.
    Replay Value: Mederately Low.

Bottom Line 6.5 Second Opinion 5

You can approach the sniper from UNDER the platform out of the view of the guy at the weapon spawn... the fact that the sniper is on an island in plain view of everyone who wants to see it makes the person camping there COMPLETELY vulnerable. Also if you are trying to go toe to toe with someone with a better weapon than you (if you have a pistol) you may want to Swing away from them (its harder to hit someone who is swinging) ... fighting isnt always the answer and if you are in a bad spot sitting there and dieing isnt the right move.. swinging away and putting yourself in a better advantage is

I don't think any style of play is wrong, but the layout of the map and spawn location of the weapons really dictates that when you spawn near one of the ranged weapons that you stay there an pick off those trying to get to those weapons, it's just logic. Instead of everyone swinging around trying to kill each other, you have 2 unfortunate suckers who were unlucky enough to spawn near the shotgun or grenade launcher getting killed as they traverse to the buildings where the ranged weapons are. I have played these types of games before, and camping can be countered on most of them, mainly because the maps are large enough to be able to sneak around the camper, or the weapons appear randomly making the camper have to move from their comfort spot when out of ammo. This is not the case with the multi-player demo of bionic commando. The map isn't small, but it's not large enough. A perfect example is the fact that there is no way to approach the perch of the sniper rifle spawn without being seen. Adversely, you can see anyone coming your way from the sniper rifles spawn point. The machine gun is a different situation as the location of this weapon is in a corner, but the range and power of the weapon allows for the person to grab the gun, kill anyone they see, and drop back down when you need an ammo refill. The shotgun and grenade launcher have two disadvantages because of their lack of range and location, they are out in the open, by that I mean they are not high enough to have an advantage point, and can be seen in plain sight from the ranged weapons. I played a round yesterday where every time I respawned, I would go after a better weapon than the hand gun, and get killed shortly after spawning, or just as I was approaching a better weapon. Whatever the case may be, it is clear that anyone having a negative view of the multiplayer demo either sucks at gaming while the rest of you are omnipotent adversaries who never loose.
