The Million dollar question: DRM for RE5 and SF IV

Hi there. I´m inspector Switchblade, owner of the Secusphere. Admin at ReclaimYourGame.

I´m the author of the Securom Technical FAQ. an article stickied at forums like Atari and 2K. I´ve helped many gamers during my quest after I discovered Securom in NEverwinter Nights 2. When I realized what happened, my DVD optical drive was trashed.

I always said that Securom conflicts with DVD drives. I´ve been flamed to hell. Users that experimentes the same issues as me were the cause they changed opinion.

Here´s a link that admits it: Securom messes with some optical drives

Notice: This game contains technology to prevent copying that may conflict with some DVD-RW and virtual drives.
This product may Contain CD-ROM supported software

Why I attack Securom? Because Capcom´s last computer game Flock! wears Securom.  You will think: "there´s no DVD check in Flock!, true, but fact is that the online authentication version is far worst than the DVD check version

It is no big secret that there are 4 Global Class Action lawsuits due to this Securom version. But it seems Capcom didn´t have too much time to think what to put to protect their games, and chose the familiar version.

I have experience in this industry, I know sometimes decission like this are sometimes made in a short window time and without thinking too much. That´s the reason of this thread, to make sure this doesn´t happen. Because is this studied that way Securom vendors will sell you again their snake oil.

I have 3 big points to proof your current DRM tactic is an epic fail:

a) EndWar and POP, last Ubisoft games, have been released DRM free and they appear to have been sold well. I asked for the sales detail many times and I got denied. The lack of mention of poor sales due to piracy only can mean one thing. Sales are good. Otherwise we would have heard from them.

b) EA has dropped Securom in its flagship game: The Sims 3: No Securom in The Sims 3: EA Flagship Game and it will use a disk check

And in Dragon Age: "simple basic disk check" No Securom, No Tages, No Starforce

Only Basic Disk Check in Dragon Age: Origins

(you have to go page 5 for viewing Derek French post where he says "basic disk check)

c) Last but not least Demigod is selling great despite of the pirates

Demigod number 3 despite of the pirates

2 big publishers like Ubisoft and EA (Capcom, you know you are number 5, EA is number 4, and Ubisoft is number 6)have dropped Securom. They have stopped believing in BSA unrelievable data to justify useless DRM. Focus on the customers, and you´ll have your sales.

Even if you want to keep your current tactic. What are you gonna do if the Spore lawsuit ends in the removal of Securom?

Think about it. And stop feeding a lousy business. We fans would appreciate any news about the DRM that is going to be used in our favourite games

Regards

I'll keep this short and sweet: SecuROM continues to be a long term partner of ours. That's not going to change. I've said it before and I'll say it again. As a technology, SecuROM is great. It's how some of our competitors have opted to apply that technology and communicate it that has been ill advised. We've always been less restrictive (more concurrent installs, revokes automatically upon uninstall, revoke tool always available, no phone homes after initial activation). We've raised the install limit on Flock (which you called out) to 100 on Steam. Why would anyone need more than 100 concurrent installs?

For SFIV PC:

The retail DRM will be disc-based SecuROM (not network authenticated this time). It will require you to have the disc in the tray to play.

Digitally, the DRM will vary from portal to portal. If you don't want SecuROM's network authentication mechanisms, Steam will use its own DRM, Impulse will use it's GOO DRM. Direct2Drive, Metaboli, Gametap, GamersGate, Capcom's Estore, Nvidia.com will all be using SecuROM's network authentication.

In this particular case, you the consumer can decide what you prefer and purchase accordingly.

You've made my day, Sven. This form of SecuROM should become a standard, it's the most user-friendly and the least annoying form of DRM for a consumer.

Those who do not like discs can always buy the game on Steam or Impulse. Everyone's happy.

Any plans for removing the copy protection in a later patch?

Well at minimum, people have options.

No plans at the moment. Even so, only the network Authenticated SecuROM solution would have the capabilities of relaxing the DRM constraints (as we did with Flock).

Hey Sven, I have a question on the DRM.

From what I know of GOO, it's made so that you can just add it to the games code instead of having to do it from scratch like with Steamworks.

Does this mean that since you will be using GOO on the Impulse version of RE5, that we can buy a retail version of the game, and add the serial key to Impulse and be able to download patches from there? I know one of the key features of GOO is the ability to use universal CD Keys, just wanted to know if you will support that with RE5.

Thanks. Laughing

Nope. The serial codes for Impulse and Steam and retail are completely different. If you want auto updates from Impulse or Steam, you need to buy from them initially.

Alright, thanks for the quick answer Sven.

Regardless, I still have my pre order at gamestop for RE5 PC, so I'm not really bothered.  Tongue out
