The release rate of Mega Man games on Virtual Console

So far, the first three Mega Man games on the NES have been released on Virtual Console, which I am eternally grateful to Capcom for. The first two games were released in Europe through 2007 and the third was released a year later. At the rate of a single Mega Man game a year, it will take up to 2012 for Mega Man 7 to be released, 2015 for the Mega Man X series after that, 2016 if you include Mega Man Soccer, 2017 for Mega Man 64...

This is going to take quite a while. Is Capcom planning to release any more Mega Man games for the Virtual Console any time soon? And if so, will we be waiting until double the expected life of a games console for them to be released?

Last I heard, Nintendo decides the releases, not Capcom.

No. Both Capcom and Nintendo decides em. But I also think that there is still so much missing of Capcoms Classics on Virtual Console. Hope we will see a few ones this year :).

It seems that high profile releases are left for milestone achievements (every 100th game) or to coincide with huge release (ex. Super Punch came around the release of Punchout Wii). The same could be said for Mega Man 9. My thoughts are if a Mega Man 10 or X9 comes along then we will see Mega Man 3-6 or Mega Man X-X3. Lately the big N has been releasing only one VC title every Monday now with all the other content Wiiware, and the DSi stuff taking up the grunt of releases on Monday.

Nintendo's big VC releases have all been first party so far. All of the SNES Donkey Kong Country and NES Mega Man games, which I consider high profile, were released casually throughout the year. If we had to wait every 50 releases for a new Mega Man game to be released, it would still take the same amount of time I mentioned before, also, other games like Donkey Kong 64, Pilotwings, Starfox/Starwing and Super Mario Land 2: Yoshi's Island would have to be worked in there as well.

Nintendo is the one who decides what gets put onto the Virtual Console Roster. Capcom only has a part when Nintendo makes a decision and it involves one of their titles... That is it. The agreement pretty much.
