Richard, I personally agree 100%. As games, RE4 & 5 were excellent. I think they are great fun, but they have become something that is not what Resident Evil is about. Action instead of horror. I'm sure there are some who don't like the games at all, but I'm also sure that I am not alone & that people do enjoy these games & that the sales are not due to the RE name alone. That's enough of the Resident Evil chat for this thread though.

The darkest Mega Man will ever get is the X/Zero series. Mega Man has and always will be kid friendly. Contrary to the beliefs of many, it's a franchise targeted towards a young demographic, specifically, elementary school children. It has to be a bit on the light side, though that's not to say the series wasn't without its dark moments... If you really want to a realistic Mega Man, grab yourself a copy of Dead Rising, get the MM outift and go at it. That's as close as it will ever get.

In fairness, Powered Up is about as kiddified as you can make a game, and I'm not one to use the term lightly. It is definitely enjoyable, but...
...well, except for Mega Man X7. That... that didn't seem to turn out so well.
Sort of a dark comedy of sorts. Just listen to some of the music and dialogue. It's like a dystopic comedy. It's definitely darker than the games, but not exactly so dark or anything like that. I've come to accept the original Mega Man series as being Capcom's version of Mario, for all intents and purposes, and the tone is more or less the same. When I was younger, I wanted something more in line with the X series, given that it is the prequel, basically. But now? Well, I wouldn't mind a tone similar to Battle Network, Star Force, and Legends. Where you know there are serious things happening, but the whole thing isn't overbearingly so, even taking the opportunity to be light-hearted at times. That said, if you want to see a more serious Mega Man, John, I recommend seeking out Maelgrim's Rockman: The Robot War. It is par excellence, and honestly, if Capcom made something like that to act as a lead-in to the X series while letting the current Classic series we all know and love do its own thing, I would not mind one iota. I doubt that will happen, but you never know.
Actually, that was the great thing about the early NES Mega Man games and they're extremely limited narrative: it could be as light or as dark as you wanted it to be, hence the above fiction I referenced, or even the cartoons of the late 80s and early 90s. On a related note, I quite like how Hitoshi Ariga handles the series. It seems to hit all the right notes to me. --LBD "Nytetrayn" |

True, powered up did have kiddy visuals, but my point was really that he was suggesting things that were already done. & Yeah, X7 was a crappy game, but it wasn't a like what he was suggesting with the RE series that was alienating its fanbase for a newer. Capcom tried something new with X7, didn't turn out as expected, & then they made up for it. I agree with what you said about the earlier games. It was all subjective. & The classic series even had it's dark moments. (Mega Man about to kill Wily at the end of VII.)

Sorry Twiggy, Super Rick and Brandon. Do any of you know the point of this thread in the first place? In the last decade, how many Mega Man games have come in the top ten list in any year as "Game of the Year"? While you may argue, talk about how Mega Man 9, X, etc. honor the series. Has any Mega Man games in the last decade been ground breaking? NES classics like Zelda, Mario, even Contra (sad to say since they haven't been good) have been making great leaps in creativity. The point of my thread is like after two dozen James Bond movies. Why doesn't Capcom go back to ground zero, with the storyline, character, setting, atmosphere and add some maturity to this series?

Is this some kind of joke topic? I expect this behavior on Gamefaqs, not Capcom Unity. Not everything needs to be hard edged. I don't want to see things become Wii-centric mind you, but I don't need anti-heroes and attitude. This isn't 1995. Leave that stuff to the old era of the WWF. I enjoy the quirky Japanese nature of Mega Man. To this day it impresses me that it began as a way to create a complex take on jan-ken-pon.
As it were, Mega Man X is filled with enough darkness including a questioning of ethics and morals. There is also quite a bit of death (ever seen the Double cut scene from Mega Man X4 or the death of Iris cut scene?). But seriously, Mega MAn doesn't need to be changed at all. If anything needs to be done, it is a more proper Mega Man 9. Really, they should have left Rockman and Forte to the position of the 9th Mega Man entry. While I apprecaite the nostalgic appeal of Mega Man 9, I dislike the absolute regression that it poses compared to Mega Man 9 and Rockman and Forte. But even still, at least it is classic fun. Mega Man can only continue to grow better. |

Native Dialect, "grow better" in what sense? A revisioned Mega Man of course alters the story that we already know. It's a different take on the universe. You know Native Dialect. I'm glad you mention gamefaqs because I am wondering if this is a site for ideas and questions to be discussed or if I'm just dealing with a bunch of fan boys on here not open to new ideas and discussing.
