The reason why I have to ask this is because it is a very real question for me. I want a very real answer as well. If anyone has ever taken a look at my unity page (which I am sure no one has) they will know what I've been wanting. I have been developing a story for the past 29 months, and I want to stand out in world. The first step for me is writing the novel. This really is the best thing I can do with my story almost entirely by myself. I've been taking college creative writing classes to assist me in improving my story writing skills. The important question is, and I want a serious answer, when I get this novel done (even if it is in draft form) what are the chances of getting Capcom interested in the possibilities and consider making it a video game? That is the general question though... More in-depth is... If I get the book done, reviewed, edited and it does get published, would it increase chances of getting it into development as a game? It seems to me like an obvious answer, but I want to hear it. Does the fact that Capcom is a company based in Japan and not here in America hurt my chances of serious consideration? And last question. If say I were to drive down to San Mateo in the near future with an appointment set up to discuss the matter with someone there, would I be able able to catch the interest of Capcom? I realize that this question cannot be answered so simply. There are a lot of "what if" and "it depends" but it comes down to interest. Interest for Capcom, interest for me, and interest for the public. Video games usually take a lot of time and money to make, so determining if the game is worth the production is what it comes down to. If anyone were to ask me why am I doing this? Why am I asking questions for something so meaningful to me on a message board? Its because I've learned that I have to be assertive. If I stay in the realm of possibilities and dreams forever, I wont get anywhere in life.
One last issue I want to address. If the question comes up of why I want it a video game and not just be happy with writing the novel, its because I originally developed the idea on the concept to fit a video game. I HAVE given thought on how it would work. Gameplay, style, story, feel, etc. But when I realized about a year ago that those elements are worked on with a development team and that there is a cap for what I can do, I began working towards the novel and the story itself. Underlying meaning and purpose shifted towards another direction, but the why I had the story set up (What I call 'the flow of events') never changed. I still developed it to fit in a video game. Does that make sense? Sorry If I rambled on and sorry if I was not clear somewhere... |

Sorry, but the only way Capcom will take your idea is if you work for them. This question gets asked almost on a weekly basis & it's always the same answer.
It's just something that isn't done.

Do to copyright issues wether you allow them or not, they don't except outside idea's in this form.
Fans can go hey this would be cool!, and they build something to make fans happy. But a general idea story, book/novel just can't be done. I'm not sure on who does what with who with current books and movies (which arent cannon with the game) But last to my knowledge, they pay capcom for liense to do those things.
You have better chance of becoming famous doing your own stuff, then getting noticed by them for work.

I already knew that it wouldn't be that simple. Going up to some developer and saying, "Hey, I want you to make this game" I know that doesn't work like that. I've known that for a long time. I simply forgot to state it when typing it up. I suppose I wasn't clear on what I am trying to say. But I did get one answer out of that in that it would have to be published as a novel first. I hope this comes out clearly... I AM NOT asking Capcom to just take this idea and just do it for me. In fact, I DO NOT want that to happen. I do want to be involved with making the game. I would be furious if I just gave everything I've done and say work with it. I would want to be with Capcom on the project every step of the way. I think more of what I am asking is, do I have the criteria to be taken seriously. Do I have what it takes to have Capcom seriously say "This can be made into a game." If it means getting an interview for the job. Fine, sign me up. If it means getting it published as a novel and getting licensed rights. Fine, where is the contract. I suppose it is more of a question on, can I make this happen if I work for it. Not just give the idea and say, hey make this. Am I making sense... Hope I'm not coming off as angry.

You have better chance of making your own company and going thru it that way. Be same as book or game path. If it inolves something capcom owns, you basicly have no chance do to copyrights.
Best bet is go for all right schooling and get all experence you can. Get a job in buiness (anywhere) more experence, when capcom got a opening, get in work your way thru ranks to w/e team..>_>

Are you sure? It is possible that it could be made with a different developer and then simply published by Capcom.
Who ever said anything about stealing? Its my own idea. I've been developing a world and concept that is all my own creation for 29 months, since April 2007.
First of all, I am in school already. I have 16 freaking units this semester, one of them is a business class (its Business Administration 52, Human Relations). Then you suggest that I work through the ranks... I've considered this before and I couldn't do that to myself. I tried to get into computer programming, but I had a falling out of sorts. In conclusion I found out that I couldn't stand myself if I became a programmer. Which is what led me to strongly support my idea of getting it as a published novel. My streangths lie in Creativity and not so much in problem-solving (although I do have problem solving skills, I just don't enjoy solving problems) Understanding how people work, how messages are sent, what people are like. Communications! Speaking, Media, Human Relations (I stated that already). These are also strengths of mine, but not my best assests, thats Creativity. I feel what I was originally asking for is somehow being ignored or overlooked. I haven't even talked about what my story is itself (not that I would publicly tell all about it). The message I am getting is that it doesn't matter if the story is good or not or that I am willing to work with Capcom on this or other aspects of it, I have no chance of ever seeing this happen. Thats the message I am recieving. I have a great deal of passon for this story (I don't want to say the name publicly). My focus, success and overall future starts with this... world I have created. Yuffie, I apologize in advance if this comes off as rude or offensive, but it seems like you are treating me as if I am completely ignorant. I will admit, I don't know everything, nobody does, but I know enough to mostly understand how the world works. No one snaps their finger and stuff happens. I'm in my 5th semster of community college. I am educated, I am being educated, raising my intellect as best I can and improving on skills... but mostly I am finding my identity and purpose, as most people do... Again, sorry for any ill tone you may find. Sounding rude is not my intention. |

Capcom won't hire you for ideas. Capcom does not solicit game ideas. Your only chance would be to get whatever job at Capcom & then talk to Sven or someone about your idea/novel.
That make sense? (Sorry, I don't mean to come off with an angry tone either. Just so we're clear.)

I now have one last question. If I got the novel published by some book publisher, would it still be possible to have capcom purchase the rights to make it a game if they liked the novel? (Assuming I got it right on how things work)

I said nothing about stealing ideas... we get this kinda question asked almost everyday... Capcom doesnt except ideas, really that simple... and after we've repeated urselfs, not to you, but to everyone who's asked.... you get lazy on the replys to over repeated questions. >_> Now for last question, if you make it and capcom happens to contact you and you got cash and rights and all legal stuff to do it. You never know. Also goes other way also, you got rights, cash, time and everything, you can ask them. If Idea is cool enough, you never know.
