They have access to way more sales data than you.

The last credible numbers I saw showed that the Wii had a higher attach rate than the PS3.

Well, the PS3 is doing horrible and most their games are multi platform so someone would buy the 360 version. Also, the PS3'S install base is so much lower than the others that it is understandable but for the Wii to have so much more systems than both the PS3 and 360 combined, you would think it would have a better attach rate? I am not sure, do you have some numbers to back your "last time I checked" statement?
GEARS OF WAR 2* (360) 1.56 million
Anyway, 360 "Record-setting software attach rate leads the industry, now at 8.1"

There's other relevant sales data that NPD has but doesnt share for free. Most game publishers like Capcom pay them a fee to see it. They have sales figures for every game released that month (not just the top ten), cumulative sales, regional info, etc. Basically, they're seeing a much bigger picture of what the market really looks like than any of us

Just a few opinions I'd like to voice here: 1. There weren't any Wii games released in Q4 with as big a marketing push as Gears or anything else on the high-def systems. So it's a little unfair to point out the attach rate. We've seen that niche games can sell on Wii (No More Heroes, Okami, Boom Blox) and tend to have a fairly long tail just like Nintendo's titles (Although, obviously not to the extent Nintendo titles do). Also Guitar Hero World Tour sold really well on the system. 2. I'm pretty sure this NPD data isn't going to make that big a difference to most companies. It might result in a few turned heads and it might make a couple studios consider upping their ante on the system, but in the case of most developers, I'm pretty sure they have already started preparing for better Wii software. If not, this won't make them. 3. What I do think will make a difference is the announcement of Dragon Quest X (and Monster Hunter Tri providing solid backup) on the Wii because now JRPG developers know which platform to settle on to make their games. Considering the ease/costs of developing on the Wii coupled with its status in Japan, I think we're going to see this have an impact more on the Eastern developers than the ones in the West (which is perfectly fine by me). Expect to see a fair few unque gems coming out of Japan in 2009 or 2010. |
