It must be nice working at a place that has such diversity in games too. I mean, Capcom does just about every genre in gaming, and does it in a way that revolutionizes the way we fans play. If I was a part of that, I'd be geeking out! :D

On a side note: Kraig, you're the director of design? I thought Francis Mao was...

Yeap, I am. Francis is the uber Sr. Director of Creative Media.

And yea -- the diversity is pretty sweet, come to think of it. Pretty hard to get bored around here.

They're designers for different things. One is software, and one is media.

Oh... I see. I suppose I should have realized that. :o

Well, I sent Francis some stuff, so put in a good word for me! :D

So I suppose Kraig does software design then? What kind of software?

And if Francis is media, then that must be more in my line of work...?

(sorry if I mixed up your jobs with the names guys :()

Either way, designing is one of the coolest jobs to have, no matter what it is. Creating new things for others is what I love to do! That's why I'm so interested in Capcom. And like you said, no way to get bored with so much diversity, you probably get to keep designing new things very frequently. :)

You should check out the "Careers" section. Just click the link. There are several positions to apply for.

If you're looking to design games, I don't think the Capcom USA office in California does any actual developement of games. As far as I know, the closest office to the United States that does any sort of game developement is the Canada office, which I believe is mostly cell phone games.

Don't quote me on this, but I think most of the games are developed in Capcom's Japan office in downtown Osaka.

You'll need experience too, and probably a degree, and a portfolio of your creative works. After that though, I have no idea. It's a tough business to get into, believe me, I'm still trying to just some attention career wise as a simple marketing/advertising/web designer for the USA office, and I have experience, a degree, and have sent them a sample portfolio.

Good luck! :) Stick to it, because I know they look for talent in their business. That's why I think they are so popular, and make such great games.

On a side note; Capcom also uses other game developers to help create games with them. You might want to check those out too. There are quite a few other companies used by Capcom just in the past two and a half years.

We moved offices (from Sunnyvale to San Mateo), and many of the arcade cabinets did not survive the dangerous cross-country trek.  The remnants still live in our warehouse downstairs, though the sticks could be better.  Grr.

Wow, that stinks.

The only reason I knew you guys had an arcade at your previous offices was because I have an issue of Video Games Magazine from 1995 where some people from there went to Capcom USA to interview some game testers about X-Men: Children of the Atom. Among all the pictures they showed, they showed a few of the game itself, and a couple pictures of the room with all the arcade cabinets.

Nice to know that Capcom takes such pride in its games that they even had some of their own games set up in their offices. :D

We still have a lot of games set up in the office.  Space is limited so big arcade cabinets are just in the warehouse, but we have some game kiosks set up in the lobby, and a lot of people have one or more consoles (stuffed with Capcom games) at their desks along with nice big 36" lcds.

So yeah, we play a lot of games, and in fact you can play against us

Seth

About how many people work in the USA office in San Mateo?

And I remember you told me a week or so ago that you only had one in-house designer. Why is that? I mean, I've been in the design business for only about 4 years, but still, it's rather common knowledge that in-house designers can generally save a great deal of expense. At my current place of employment, we charge an outrageous hourly fee for design. I can't imagine it's any better in Cali...

Including finance, HR, facillities, legal, product development, marketing, PR and a few execs, about 70 people. The largest group among those, is finance believe it or not.

Actually we have two + a creative director who in his own right is a good designer. :)

When you're limited by headcount (not expense) you use the heads where you absolutely need them and outsource what's outsourceable. Don't look for logic. You won't find it. :)
