Being a member from a Resident Evil fan-site has already given me great pleasures in three years: We were able to talk with some of the voice actors of RE's franchise (the last one was Sally Cahill, the voice behind Ada "bitch-in-red-dress" Wong), and were one of the little to have watched RE4 demo sessions in TGS.
It's kind of hard, though, to keep this way of working, even when we love do it. But here we are, taking Face Your Fear of Resident Evil to a new level - or at least, is that what we expect.
Last news I've posted was translation English to Portuguese of "Hands-On Preview" from IGN about RE5. Being a RE-fan that hasn't a severe problem with the new action course that Capcom has developed since RE4, I was more than gladly to do such thing. I have to admit something before keep going with this: I work a lot! Have a designer job in an engineering company and develop my own game project (although in this last one, I've being helped for a partner) and still have college efforts to attend to at night. Therefore, haven't any time to spend looking for E3 news - can you image how was to know that FFXIII is gonna be released both X360 and PS3?
Anyway, received the newsletter from IGN in my e-mail and went down their website looking for the Hands-on. Must say that I was kind of excited, 'cause wasn't able to see nothing from Takeuchi speech - witch someone told me was kind of funny because he was speaking Japanese to a crown of Americans. [Go figure...]
When I find it, and soon as I begin to read it, my girlfriend - also RE fan - send me a txt messenge telling me to go as quick as I was able to FYFRE and put an end to a discussion in our news comments. The fight was for a stupid thing, the same that move huge discussion all around the world: "Capcom is a capitalist m****f**** that doesn't respect our wishes", as one of our users said.
Patiently, told the ones involved in the fight to go find some other place for such discussion. A few moments later, one of the "pissed" add me in MSN and came with a whole speech about why he said what he said and, annoyingly, try to convince me that he has the reason.
First thing he told me was that RE5 was a mere copy of RE4 - just have enhanced graphics and a better AI for the enemies (even though, he also told me that the moves from Kijuju villains were the same of Spanish Ganados). By that time, I wasn't able to look for gameplays that have been upped into web; neither to take a side in the discussion. Just for the records, I don't thing in Capcom as such "evil capitalist" company, just see it as a usual company.
Anyway, let me get to the point, the same angry user then tells me that he wasn't the only one unpleased with RE5 and the way that Capcom "pushes" to the franchise. Pissed with him, just deleted from my contact list and went back to "Hands-on". By the time I finish the reading, got myself stuck into a dilemma: "If Resident Evil 5 is a "Resident Evil 4 on steroids", as IGN previewer wrote, haven't they [Brazilian fans unpleased with Capcom and stuff] any point of reasonable motivations?"
Quickly, typed for the huge Brazilian domain of useless **** and profiles - a.k.a ORKUT - and look up for RE communities. What I find out was that the opinion from that angry user was a much bigger thing, one that even involves fans as me, pleased with Capcom new way through: Brazilian fans aren't pleased with Resident Evil 5.
So far, what I've been able to notice is that the opinion is a common motivation: The very look-alike with Resident Evil 4. Disturbed with the fact, went to Gametrailers to watch RE5 gameplays -- and must say that I have declined into their common motivation: so far, RE5 is much alike RE4. Although, I'm not completely blind and was able to see several changes between the two games, but they're not great ones.
Feature a real-time Item Menu is a pleasure to be seen - gives me the chills to think about having to open the menu while the cabin is been overtaken by Kijuju-angry-zombies. And must say that the coming back of a controllable partner is what gives me the motivation to buy the game - Love RE0.
However, unlike my thoughts and wishes, there are a few points to that need a new focus from the development team so the project can be accepted -- at least between the majorities of Brazilian fans: FEAR. Among the Brazilian gamers RE fans, there's a common opinion for RE4, there is a more conscious attention to the action and the pursuit of Leon and Ashley, than the fear factor... Although I cannot say that I agree: I have taken several minutes to recover myself after being scared for a stupid Ganado that grabs me from behind and kicked my **** of it.
That said, the real deal (I think I get into it now) is that RE5, so far, look much alike RE4 because the setting published and the gameplays are just the same. I cannot argue with Takeuchi when he says: "In fact, to be evaluated as an upgrade of the great previous title is really positive feedback", but I must say that, well, we have so far a few motives to do it. Not only us, but many of great previews are up to the same common motivation.
It's kind of sad, anyway, to be obligate to agree with that opinion.
It's been a long post, I know, but I think I passed down my first messenge here, one that I attend to do every time I can: Brazilians expected more from Resident Evil 5.
