I would love a new Darkstalkers game. I really believe it would do better sales wise than a lot of us think. There were factors at play during the PS1 era that probably hurt the marketability of the series at the time: The PS1s limited RAM, and the Saturn's limited popularity meant there wasn't really a good system for bringing the series to the home market. No longer a problem, PS3 and 360 both have the power to do the series right and enough users to make it financially successful. A lot of gamers at the time were fixated on 3D fighters and considered 2D fighters "uncool" add to that, the market was flooded with average fighting games. Also no longer a problem, 2D fighters have earned a place of respect among many gamers who now consider it a classic gaming genre separate from the 3D fighters. There are also far fewer fighting games flooding the market these days, only a handful a year instead of a dozen or two. I know it will probably not match Street Fighter 4 in sales, but it should still be successful enough to turn a decent profit. There are a lot of fans of the series out there, just visit any game/anime site with fan art or cosplay galleries and you will see plenty of love for the characters. All for a game that hasn't had a new edition in over a decade. I will buy a new Darkstalkers game! |

All the DS games came out for ps1...even if not Arcade perfect (The Alpha weren't Arcade perfect, yet they sold) I think DS's real problem was the same problem Guilty Gear faces...
When it comes to fighting games, one always wants a cast with ENOUGH variety that it's accesible to ANYONE. I never felt like I could actually relate to any of the characters. As opposed to Alpha which had a lot of diverse faces (was very inviting). DS has variety, from a snowman....to vampires, etc. But still, I think they could've done better if didn't feel so OBSCURE. For me personally I also didn't like the male cast too much. While Demitry, Jedah, the Samurai (forget his name), and Raptor and ****ing awesome, you have STUFF like the Frankenstein, Anakaris, the Snowman, etc. which are way too wacky for their own good.....
I think that's the other thing, the wackyness can really turn "casual" gamers off. Anakaris, the Pyron guy, and the fish......meh it was a bit too wacky sometimes... But that's to be expected with a cast of "monsters." The fact that it was 2D probably hurt it too...
Note: This whole DS rant was just from how I saw it back in the days, doesn't mean it's fact or anything. I tried to back up my statements though
PS: Raptor's bliss form needs to make it in! I really wouldn't want any other bliss forms to make it though, that'd be horrible actually, would seem some cheesy too. But yes, Raptor's form is indeniably the most liked.

and I would argue with them too. As a writer from a writers stand point, especially when working in a visual medium wether it be comics, movies, or videogames, that if they do not include in the visual medium what they are refering to then it is subject to the possibility of being retconned. and One can play Nightwarriors and Darkstalkers 3 and determine for themselves which endings are canon. and playing Darkstalkers 3 determine which endings are the most likely canon and which ones are not, as a rule a Boss's ending if it has them take over the world is never canon so those are immediatly left out like Pyron or Jedah. As such I would argue with the writers of those books over wether or not Demitri should be stated to have consumed Pyron when its illogical, irrational, and not even actually hinted at. Yes I can accept Pyron being killed by Demitri, but Demitri's increased power, if it can even be called that in Darkstalkers 3 can just as easily be attributed to his backstory regarding his increasing power back to what it used to be. Looking at Darkstalkers 3, regarding which ending of NIghtwarriors are canon. Demitri: DS/NW: possibly canon, but it can not be made certain by events in Darkstalkers 3 if he did in fact take over control of the monsters of Earth, as the ending seems to imply defeating Pyron did this, which doesn't fit Pyron's back story. So plausible. DS 3: No, for future games this ending would be un-acceptible. Jon Talbain: DS/NW: Canon: Darkstalkers 3 states that he had thought himself cured but his powers came back. DS 3: Possibly canon: there is nothing to prevent this ending of him chasing another werewolf who might know something about his past. In fact this ending could easily be used to advance his story. Victor: DS/NW: Canon, events are solidified by story in Darkstalkers 3 DS 3: Possibly canon: while it has Victor die, for something like him death is relative term, there is nothing to prevent his coming back... and actually I'll stop right here as I already did a post explaining how all these characters can come back. In fact the only ones whose endings would prove a problem from Nightwarriors if made canon would be, Huitzil and Pyron. in fact the story of Darkstalkers 3 supports all the other characters' ending being true from Nightwarriors, even Lord Raptor (it was explained away that Ozom had given him false power to test his loyalty, and Raptor was coming after Ozom when he came across Jedah's portal that was made out of Ozom) Even Bishamon they had the armor and sword create a new body, and Hsien-Ko and Mei-Ling regain their powers. In fact the only characters that have issues being in Darkstalkers 3 are Pyron and Donovan, although Donovan can be explained away by a dream psychic projection from Anita. Its Pyron that is the one and only real issue. In fact I'd sooner accept the Vampire Hunter 2 ending of Pyron being swallowed by Jedah than the idea of Demitri consuming Pyron. in Darkstalkers 3 the only endings that have issues being canon would be, Jedah, Demitri, Lilith, Q-Bee, and possibly Huitzil *depends on direction of Darkstalkers 4*. In fact I would suspect those Capcom official books were retconned in their details regarding Gouken when he was brought back to life, and had they decided that Street Fighter III never happened they would have changed that too. and when it comes down to it the stories behind Darkstalkers is sloppy anyway, it needs some over-hauling. Like I said somehow no-one once noticed that Raptor's date of birth contradicts his method of becoming a zombie. Punk rock and any rock for that matter wouldn't have been around till Lord Raptor was a wrinkly old man. Kinda hard to die a "satanic" heavy metal punk-rock star with that. and we have Demitri placed as Romania as his origin when his story says he was born in Makai. When it comes down to it the honest truth is I don't think they ever expected anyone to look at the story aspect of these games as close as they do Street Fighter so could just as quickly said, protagonist ate antagonist and not given it a second thought, even though no endings or continuing story supports it. and I ask again, why is it so important that Pyron was eaten by Demitri. Honestly I can't read back on the posts while typing and I forgot why in hell-fire's name we're discussing this at this moment. Its not even important. Just say Demitri killed Pyron or what ever, I just have issues with the whole idea that he ate him, that just sounds like some lazy writer at that fact book made it up on the spot, with no support. Its like Street Fighter II, for the longest time it was (Fact) that Akuma killed Bison at the end of the tournament. Sure even those books stated that. Until recently when they retconned that to say Akuma didn't kill him, and it was a team effort of other fighters that took out Bison.
