I really think some of the fundamental problems with Darkstalkers being successful were 1) The sprites and the fighting system really didn't advance far beyond Super Street Fighter II: Turbo or Street Fighter Alpha 1. It was sort of an inferior fighting game as a whole. 2) There weren't nearly enough characters in the game that made a large variety of young gamers say 'ooo! I want to play him/her!'. Their most appealing characters were females and the male characters... well you had an 50-year old Werewolf, two old suit-wearing men, a boring as hell vampire hunter, a fish-man, a zombie, a Frankenstein's monster and the rest of the male characters were barely sympathetically human. 3) A number of the more appealing characters had extremely difficult to use fighting styles that weren't very intuitive and were quite annoying to use. I've never figured out how exactly one is supposed to use Felicia, Zabel, Victor or Aulbath very effectively compared to Jedah, Pyron or Phobos.
I absolutely LOVE the premise of the game, but the execution did leave something to be desired. But, still, after the Reisdent Evil, Onimusha and Devil May Cry series, I am sure that Capcom could make an absolutely wicked new Darkstalkers game.
1.The sprites were never much better than SFII because they hadn't remade any Darkstalkers sprites since Darkstalkers 3.The sprites have just been transported to different games.
2.The characters were as good as Capcom could have made them.I think the biggest problem was the tone and action of the game.I don't think it was the characters themselves that weren't good I think it was the moves.
3.If you had trouble using those characters except for Lord Raptor than there is something wrong with you not the game.

Good points. But also don't forget that Darkstalkers updates sorta came around kinda late, just when the 3D fighters were on the rise. If Capcom had taken a differebt route with the series maybe it would've been more successful.........Just a guess.

Agreed.That was a massive failure on Capcom's part.I bought the Chaos Tower game on PSP but only because it as Capcom I don't play it.I agree they need to go a different route.They need to make a 3-D fighter.Tekken\DOA style graphics with English voice overs....good English voice overs.
I used to laugh it off as "Halloween StreetFighter", but that was for a brief week and then I hit the Arcade and watched the demo screens and others playing and it really impressed me, to this day. I don't have a least favorite character except for.. B.B.Hood? The bee gal? But my faves are Dimitri, Morrigan, definitely Felicia lol, Anakaris, John Talbain & Lord Raptor. Maybe old bigfoot too, and the robot, and the ghost samurai.. Okay I guess I about like em all. I'm surprised this be the only thread on here about this awesome game. I'd like it on PS2, {closest I got to that now is capcom snk fighting evolution or something, 4 of each game's characters, kinda a mess.}

Lateness didn't stop MvC2 being a big fan-zombie hit in a post-Soul Calibur/Tekken Tag Tournament era. 3D wouldn't have made a difference as games like Plasma Sword weren't very successful franchisewise.
I forgot to metion to you guys that I have the Vampire Graphic file. Here's a pic from the book. It also has the concept art and sketches of the characters. I can try to send them here if you guys want me to?
Why are there no Jedah lovers here? B.B. Hood, Anita, and Jedah ftw.
Jedah is a true villian. An all-around inspiring design. But I'm also more of a Donovan fan. One of the most intriguing fighting game designs in history.
Darkstalkers- It's a great game with a loyal, if small, following of fans. There is no Darkstalkers board on the BBS currently, so, in a stroke of genius (or fanaticism, if you wanna get picky with the details) a couple of us decided it would be a good idea to make an unofficial thread for the series- a place where Darkstalkers fans can gather, talk, share theories and ideas...
I decided that the CGD would be the best place for this thread, though technically, most fighting game discussion takes place in the Street Fighter Forum. However, Darkstalkers is not Street Fighter. It's very similar, and don't get me wrong- Street Fighter is a great game. Heck, without SF, fighting games as we know them would have never been the same. But Darkstalkers and Street Fighter are also different as... as... well, night and day!
So, anywho... welcome to the thread, blah blah blah. You know the drill! Let's GO GO GO!!! ...Oh man, that last part sounded stupid. >_>; -Morrigan A.
Oh, before I go, here's a topic to discuss, I guess. Who's your favorite character? (Oh, c'mon! You saw this coming from a mile away!) If you can't guess mine, well... you're a lost cause.
My favorite character of all is none other than Felicia. My reasons for liking her is that she's quick, she cute, and she's part-cat (I love cats.) I hope Capcom would put her in more games. I don't know about you, but I hope Darkstalkers would get the same treatment as Streetfighter and go 3D and have a 4th installment in the series.
