One more for the road-- Capcom-related scans

Thursday, June 19, 2008, 10:43 AM [Capcom Stuff]

Just some random Capcom stuff I scanned a while back.

    From EGM August '93:

    The SF2 Turbo American ad.

A preview of Mega Man 6. Interesting to note is that on the second link there, the elusive Mega Man X beta is shown. The Mega Man X game we ended up getting was much different than the beta. Much different.

    From Video Games April '95:

A pictorial tour of Capcom USA. This article has a weird history because it chronicles a trip to Capcom USA to see a preview of the new (at the time) X-Men game called Children of the Atom. It also shows former Capcom USA president Ryuichi Hirata, the mini-arcade they used to have, and more. This is from before they relocated to San Mateo, California.

    From EGM December '01:

A three-page interview with Hideki Kamiya on his inspirations for the Devil May Cry series. He mentions some interesting stuff, such as some DMC game mechanics being inspired by bugs from other Capcom titles like Onimusha.

That's all I have right now to tide you guys over, and it's a small preview of what's to come!

Rockman EXE 6 Diveman EX Battle

Thursday, June 19, 2008, 10:08 AM [Capcom Stuff]

Just something to tide you guys over until I come back, I guess. This video is from a few months back. It's from when I battled Diveman EX in Rockman EXE 6: Dennoujuu Faltzer.

Tried not to get hit throughout the battle,  but ended up getting hit once anyway. Blah.

My plans for when I get back from break.

    Thursday, June 19, 2008, 06:16 AM [General]

Well, I was supposed to make three huge blog entries yesterday, but only had time to do one. I caught a little bit of a snag in that I had some makeup work to do at school that I didn't even know about..... *sigh*

So I'm planning to continue my blogging after this next two weeks is over. I will be doing a retrospective on Mega Man (the original series), another entry of "Underrated Capcom Game of the Month" which I've started but have no time to finish yet, and a couple other blog posts to make up for all that lost time. I promise it'll be updates galore when I get back.

My favorite female Capcom characters, part 1

Wednesday, June 18, 2008, 03:30 PM [Capcom Stuff]

Here are my favorite female Capcom characters. I'll do a male version later.

    Devilotte (Cyberbots):

Devilotte de Deathsatan III, alternate spelling Devilot, is a character from the Capcom fighting game Cyberbots. She is the daughter of King Deathsatan. She pilots the Super-8, an octopus-shaped mech, hoping to win against the other Cyberbot pilots in order to steal their parts. She isn't involved in either side of the Earth Corps; she just wants to fight, basically. Her two cronies, Dr. Stein and Jigoku Daishi, are more than just makeshift people to help make her seem more sinister; Dr. Stein actually built the S-008 Super-8.

The reasons I like her? For one, she's quite cool. She pilots an octopus-shaped mech, just fighting others for the hell of it. She's pretty much a spoiled brat who has a super-powerful dad, and uses it to her advantage. Truly unique. Her mech's arsenal in Cyberbots is one to be feared (well, part of that is since she's a midboss in CB, and has to be unlocked to be used), and her appearance in Marvel vs. Capcom is quite hilarious. Let's not forget her being unlockable in Puzzle Fighter II! Devilotte's design is also one of a kind; she's sinister but stylish. Her vampire-like fangs and shiny tiara just add a special touch to her design. She's one of my favorite Capcom females, even though she only appears once in a blue moon.

    Tessa (Warzard):

Tessa, also known as Tabasa in Japan, is from the Capcom fighter Red Earth (Warzard JP). She is a sorceress from Icelarn, who likes to travel around the world and absorb as much knowledge as she can. But her true motivation for fighting is when very large storms randomly appear in her homeland-- she becomes wary and starts looking for clues as to how it happened. She has three cats, Al, Evan, and Shina, whom she uses frequently in her attacks.

I like Tessa simply because she's a very spontaneous character. Shirt sleeves turning into dragons, shooting energy balls out of her hands that look like yin-yangs, levitating opponents using a lever and dropping huge-as-crap meteors onto them, using her three cats to kick the opponent, her hat sprouting a sinister smile outta nowhere. Her movelist is very extensive and unique, sporting some very unorthodox moves. She's quite cute and whimsical, too, and has one heck of a backstory. I like her Pocket Fighter appearance the most, where her good qualities are amplified tenfold. One of the best characters Capcom has ever made, for sure.

    B.B. Hood (Vampire Savior):

B.B. Hood is a character from Vampire Savior/Darkstalkers 3, who is known in Japan as Bulleta. She is pretty much everything bad about the human race rolled into one cute, (seemingly) sweet, (again, seemingly) innocent little girl. She hunts Darkstalkers for money and fame, and really hates it when others stand in her way. She seems to have the biggest grudge against J. Talbain. She's ruthless, vicious, psychotic, murderous, and schizophrenic all at the same time, but hides behind the facade of an innocent girl.

I love B.B. Hood. She is pretty much the human representation of an average Darkstalker-- a ruthless creature, thinking mostly only of herself and her own personal gain. "Screw the rest," she says, and blazes through nearly anybody in her way with a hot spray of lead. B.B. Hood is most likely Capcom's representation of Roald Dahl's version of Little Red Riding Hood-- that version of her kills the Big Bad Wolf and uses him as a coat (the game references this if you play as Talbain and get Hood as a new challenger ). Her array of moves is awesome-- she hides mines up her dress, a supply of missiles in her basket, and also carries molotov cocktails, exploding apples, a knife, and an uzi which she uses frequently. The Marvel vs. Capcom 2 version of her is even more maniacal; her attacks pack even more punch and look even more deadly (and funny).

She also hides two gunmen, Smith and Wesson (their names differ depending on the source) under her cape to fire off large amounts of ammo at her hapless opponents. Not to mention she has a butler who hands her her money to count while she smokes. Her winquotes are hilarious, as is her ending, where the wolves are scared of her. Now, with that kind of versatility, who wouldn't love B.B. Hood? Probably a psycho. :D

    Tron Bonne (Mega Man Legends):

Tron Bonne is one of the antagonists of Trigger in Mega Man Legends. She's the resident mechanical expert out of all the Bonnes, and has a crush on Trigger for one-and-a-half Legends games after she is saved from a dog named Paprika by Trigger (who, depending on the region, either tells him to go away, or just kicks him away). She created all 41 of the Servbots, and basically treats them as either children or henchmen, depending on the situation. She appears somewhat cold but hides a warm heart deep down underneath her "tough" exterior.

Tron Bonne is one of Mega Man Legends' best new characters. She and her brothers Teisel and Bon serve as not only pretty good antagonists, but also as comic relief too. Tron herself is smart, sassy, and serves to ultimately be a compelling character. You'll feel for her through her unrequited love for Trigger, and feel pity for her when she tries to turn Mega Man against Roll in Mega Man Legends 2. She's an insanely cute and complex character. Her design is pretty simple, but does the trick, and she has a wide array of moves in her MvC2 appearance. My favorite iteration of her besides that one would be the Misadventures of Tron Bonne one where she pilots Gustaff, just like in MvC2. Destroying everything you come in contact with = instant win.

    Tiffany (Rival Schools):

Tiffany Lords (alternatively Tiffany Rose) is an American foreign exchange student at Pacific High School. She and her crush, Roy Bromwell, help investigate the source of the kidnappings happening at various schools in Japan during the time of the original Rival Schools game. She and Roy are later brainwashed by students at Justice High School, and later decides to go back to America to try to become a bodyguard/bouncer. In Project Justice, she and Roy return to Japan to investigate the newest happenings surrounding Kurow Kirishima and some other students.

After this is all said and done, Tiffany returns to America again along with Roy. Tiffany herself is pretty much an eccentric character in the Rival Schools universe, even compared to the likes of Roberto and Raizo. She's basically a cheerleader-turned-kickboxer, and this is reflected in a lot of her moves. She, for the most part, cannot speak Japanese correctly, and this incites some weird responses from Japanese students.

Out of all these characters I say are some of my favorites, Tiffany would probably take at least my number two spot for favorite female Capcom character. She's beautiful, has a great arsenal of moves, some witty quotes, a clever design, and she's really gotta be the coolest female kickboxer I've ever seen. Her use of English words in actual gameplay (e.g. "Wonderful!" "Beautiful!" "Exciting!") is kinda out of place in a game full of mostly Japanese characters, which makes her inclusion all the more ironic/funny. In gameplay, she hits pretty hard, and a lot of her moves are very unorthodox (such as her doing a cheerleader split kick as her launcher-- classic stuff). She's definitely one of the top females in video games for me.

This wraps up the first part. I'll be doing the male edition after break, as well as part two of the female edition, after which I'll do the second part of the male edition. Let me know what you guys think so far.

Oh, and I noticed most of my favorites are blonde. That's just a very weird coincidence. :P

After tomorrow, I won't be on for two weeks.

    Wednesday, June 18, 2008, 07:56 AM [General]

Today I'll probably make three major blog posts-- one for July's Underrated Game of the Month, and a couple others.

Tomorrow I'm gonna go back home to begin summer break. During that time, nobody can live in the dorm room (which is where I live at), and must take home all the belongings they're gonna need. My parents, whose house I'm staying at, don't have Internet access, so I'm leaving my computer here at the dorm. Everything else is going, though. :P

But after July 7th, expect me to be back with a vengeance!
