The Top 7... Worst jobs in the games industry

    Tuesday, June 24, 2008, 04:06 PM [General]

Being formally a non-paid intern, now grunt, I was always thought, "is there anything worse than this?"

     (ex: taking pictures at wondercon)

And Gamesradar.com agrees...yes, there are worse things than being a non paid intern at a video game company.

Top 7 worst jobs in the games industry

My personal favorite because they created a word to describe it:

PR for Crappy Licensed Games ( I think our PR guys would agree)

We can't imagine that any public relations job is particularly fun, though some seem to enjoy the challenge of convincing us that we should give a rat's **** about their game and then taking the fall when we call it a complete failure and Photoshop piles of dung over all of the meticulously selected screens they sent us.

What's even worse is when you have to hawk a game you have absolutely no interest in - and we see it all the time. We even coined the word "unthusiasm" to describe it.

    Why I love Capcom

    Monday, June 16, 2008, 05:01 PM [General]

My life as a gamer Why? Because I love video games and I can't get enough of them.

My first game I remember playing was Super Mario Bros. on the NES and loved it.  I was never able to completely beat the game, I was only 6, but it was fun.  Duck hunt gave me really good aim for any shooting game afterward, I own my boyfriend in head shots in Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, and there was that really cool Kung Fu game I never found correlated to any other game, but if I find it in Wii Shop, I'll buy it.

My parents thought it was cute that I like to play video games and thought that I would eventually get away from them and do girl things like play the piano or hang out with girls at the mall.  Don't get me wrong, I do play the piano and I love shopping, but the video game bug never left me.  The game that changed me from casual gamer to video game junky was Street Fighter II.  What fascinated me was there was a girl in the game that was playable. The significance of Chun Li is that I finally had someone I can relate to.  Instead of saving the princess, I get to beat on guys and as a female gamer that was cool.  From then on Chun Li was my character.   Did I ever care that there were 4 reincarnations of Street Fighter II?  The answer is no because they just made Chun Li better and better in every game.   Do I care that at times she is a bottom tier character?  It just makes me want to be better at playing her. However, I am happy when she is a top tier character because it just makes playing that much better.

Now that Street Fighter IV is coming out and I have gotten a chance play it, it reminds me of what one of the arcade monkeys said to me, "You're here now, but in a couple of years, you'll stop playing just like the rest of them."

That was 10 years ago and I'm still playing the new incarnation of Street Fighter, probably before he'll ever get to, but the best part is I get to tell my parents, "All those years of playing video games finally paid off."
