    A Megaman Story

    Wednesday, October 15, 2008, 11:11 PM [General]

My story with Megaman is much like so many of yours. When I was five, back in 1990, I saved up money to buy a video game. My mother took me to Toys R Us and I wanted Megaman. I couldn't tell you why today, but I wanted it back then. We went to the video game aisle and it wasn't even being displayed. My mother assured me they had the game and we saw a manager. The manager wrote MEGA MAN $29.99 on a piece of paper and told me to bring it to the cashier, as they had received it that very day. The cashier retrieved a copy of the game, and I was charged $20 less than what it normally sold for. I brought it home, ripped it out of the box, and immediately started playing. Guts Man's stage whooped my little kid butt. It would be a long time before I mastered the platforms. Luckily, I was able to defeat Bomb Man and at least have that accomplishment. Over the years, I got better at the game, and as more Megaman games came out, I got them. Whether as presents or by saving up money, I accumulated the whole collection. Megaman 2 and 3 were Easter presents from an uncle. Megaman 7 was a copy I'd rented so many times that the cashier thought I deserved to keep it. Megaman 8 was purchased, despite never having even touched a Playstation. Finally, I saved up the money to import a $70 copy of Rockman & Forte. This does not include the spin-off series, the various fights with my brothers over who deserved to buy which games (Megaman was mine, Sonic was his), and finally, the decision to buckle down and buy a Playstation 2 for the sole purpose of playing Megaman 8 and Megaman X4.Megaman has been a small but noticeable part of my life. I clamored for him to be in the original Smash Bros game. After all, who is more Nintendo than Megaman? With 14 proper Classic series games currently out on Nintendo systems (almost all of them, in one form or another), I'm still campaigning for him to be added as downloadable content for Brawl. But I ramble.

I believe what makes me stand out among Megaman fans is this: A few months ago, I watched King of Kong. It was then I decided to achieve the high score in a game I was good at. When I realized I wasn't good at any video games, I decided to do it for a game I loved. Megaman. After months of practicing and many many many failed attempts, I managed to succeed in my endeavor. I sent in a copy of the tape and I am now the Twin Galaxies recognized champion. http://www.twingalaxies.com/index.aspx?c=22&pi=23&gi=2018&vi=3494

In love of Megaman and the series, we are all equals. It would be impossible to love the series more than any one of us, I believe. I just hope my accomplishment is enough to show my dedication.

In addition, the prize, should I win it, would be donated to Child's Play for auctioning off to raise funds. In times of sickness and loneliness and sadness, Megaman has been there for me, as corny as that must sound, and I hope that he'll continue to bring joy to children's lives for years to come. This contribution, I hope, would further that cause.

Thank you for reading my story.
