DLC abuse has got to go... HEY HEY HO HO *Holds sign up*

    Wednesday, March 18, 2009, 10:43 AM [General]

This is an official protest to the practices of what I am now dubbing as DLC abuse (Downloadable content abuse). Given the already horrible example of MM9 has scarred people with we are now given another example of this practice with RE5. Not one week after its release we now have DLC in the form of a versus mode for 5 bucks more, and I paid for the special edition. I don't know how some people are even defending this practice anymore. It is literally RIPPING US OFF and in my opinion wholly unethical. DLC these days has now become the means for greedy developers to create games that are half done or to hold back content to milk more money out of the consumer.

    This is Capcoms laughable "justification":

    kotaku.com/5170633/capcom...

"This is the part where I get to say "BS"," he wrote on the Capcom forums. "RE5 is well worth every penny of $60. A huge game, with tons of replay value, loads of unlockables, new weapons, co-op, mercenaries mode, etc. If any game warrants its price point, it's RE5.

"Prior to the announcement of the Versus mode, no one complained they weren't getting their money's worth with the initial release because it packs TONS of value because it is an amazing game. So if people were already satisfied with what the package had, when we offer MORE, why is it people feel they've been somehow cheated? If you don't find value in our secondary offerings, the choice is simple, don't purchase it. If you do find it valueable (and we hope you do) please do buy it and enjoy it."

Svensson goes on to explain that any downloadable content that Capcom does has a budget separate from the main game.

"Secondly, whenever we do PDLC, that content exists with its own budgets, it's own profit and loss analaysis with its own forecasts. If it didn't, that extra content wouldn't have been put into production, because it did not fit within the production budget of the base product.

"The content that is shipping in the full game exists within its own budget. The content shipping afterward (regardless of how close to release it is... because the goal IS to have it release relatively closely to the base product's release) exists within its own budget. To try and have it release in a timeframe that is relatively close to the initial release, development starts well before the base product is on the shelves. There's no other way to keep it within 3 to 6 weeks of the initial release (which is the goal)."

Yeah we didn't complain you moron, we didn't complain cause you hadn't pulled the rug out from under us yet, I didn't know there was additional content you held back. Only after you BSed your audience and they found out what you had done they complained. We simply assumed prior to the announcment that what we had was the complete and total game. So this reaction is totally expected. You ****ed up Capcom and its not the first time. Start listening to your consumers and fix the problem or pay the penalty for it. Your bottom line is at risk here.

This is some serious coporate BS.

To be fair though there is DLC that is ok, I am alright with costumes and the like though the price points are often ridiculous.

The burnout series has a good stance on DLC. There DLC is actual additions to the game, not nickel and diming people to death. Have a look for yourself.

    xbox360.ign.com/objects/8...

This is DLC done right. It is done as an addition to the game not as something that was deliberately taken out or held back. I would happily pay for this. That is DLC done right. Another example is Half Life, episode 1 and 2 are awesome pieces of DLC and if it was not offered in The Orange Box I would have bought it, personally I can not wait until episode 3 comes out.

The other problem with DLC is that it is allowing developers to make half games. When they announced that games were going to be 10 dollars more I wasn't happy but the justification was that this was neccesary, so I accepted it. Now slap on 20 dollars of DLC and the abuse and I have little reason to buy it at launch. What I do now is if I feel a game isn't worth the money and the DLC is being abused I wait for the game to drop in price or go to a bargain bin for like 20 bucks, then pick it up, usually skipping the content. Why should I spend $80 on game? In a depressed economy trying to pay bills etc Capcom is alienating their audience. The other thing is that a lot of this content back in the day were secret items or other secrets that you had to find or unlock. Dead space, for example, has some snazzy suits to get as DLC. However how much cooler would the game have been if you had to find these suits in game? Thats replay value right there and it is being stripped from games. Resistance fall of man took the idea of new stuff and added to higher difficulties giving you new weapons in the higher difficulties instead of marketing it. Genious cause it made the game epic. Imagine what The Legend of Zelda for the NES would be like if it was released now. You want that second quest that Zelda presents you with at the end? $15 bucks please. :|

We are turning whole games into pieces and parts to be bought and since there are no laws to regulate and control this DLC is up to the consumer to regulate this and I recomend you do this by complaining about it and ultimately not buying the content.

Capcom. Stop being greedy already, a good product stands on its own.

Anyways I was just checking on people here and I noticed you have the same amount of friends as I do 2 lol. So I was wondering if you would add me to you're friendship list seems like we both are interested in the same games...
