We’ve seen how sketches became sprites, and some vintage scans of original box artwork. Now let’s take a closer look at original artwork created specifically to go with these 8-bit classics.

When it comes to game related artwork, one of my favorite categories is concept art—and just writing this, I finally realize the reason I own several game artbooks. I just love looking at the different design ideas for each character, enemy designs, color palettes, sceneries, etc. It always feels like I’m diving into the mind of the artists and seeing what they’re seeing when the graphics get rendered on screen.

This to me is particularly interesting when it comes to 8-bit (and 16-bit) games, given the visual gap between concepts and sprites, and even more so when

Let’s take another look back into the past with a closer look at some of the materials featured in our Museum section of the Gallery mode. This time, it’s all about the original packaging art.

Original materials from the late 80s and early 90s era of gaming are oftentimes really hard to find. Much like my 90s bedroom, archiving and organizing material in the industry just wasn’t super clean back then, so we worked closely with the experts at Digital Eclipse to find some great materials for this section of the game’s gallery.

Similarly to the Pencil to Pixel sketches we recently showed you, there’s a certain charm to seeing rough and sometimes raw pieces of art. In this case, we actually got high resolution scans of each game’s original box art.

On April 18, we get transported back to the early 90s with The Disney Afternoon Collection, but in the meantime, let's hop backstage and take a look at some of the rad extras featured in this package.

In addition to 6 classic gems, a nifty Rewind feature and new game modes, we've gathered a variety of original artwork from the games' development and marketing of that era and put them all in one gallery, divided into 4 categories: Pencil to Pixel, Museum, Original Artwork, and Odds & Ends.

This week, we'll take a look at Pencil to Pixel, a really cool category for fans of the games, the TV shows, or those that just like to see creation processes... or all of the above.

Starting with the header image, we see the original reference drawings for the TV show, on the left, and the rendition
