Street Fighter Movie: Hopes, Concerns & Wishes

    Tuesday, October 14, 2008, 10:40 AM [General]

If you're any kind of Street Fighter fan like I am, you're gobbling up any kind of morsel of info you can from all the SF projects. And depending on who you are, maybe you like, dislike or just don't care as long as you get your hands on it. I'm the latter but not without my own opinion.

Street Fighter 4 is just awesomeness. When the first bits of info started to come out, I was somewhat disappointed/upset in that Bison/Vega was brought back after supposedly being killed by Akuma/Gouki's Shun Goku Satsu. But the more I thought on it, the more I started to accept it as fact and the more I got used to the idea. Now with the inclusion of Gouken (and the american version had BETTER NOT call him Shenlong), who also was supposed to be killed by Akuma's Instant Hell Murderer, is now in this game. With a few nice touches of detail and move set, he fits into the whole thing perfectly with the big question now being, "Why didn't they stay dead?". Bison especially because he's nothing but bad guy so he would've been dragged into the 7th circle of hell and affixed to it's surface, but that didn't happen. In the end, the story of the game is catching my attention and I really want to know whats going on. Story, for me, is everything in a game. I like getting a reason for what I'm doing and Street Fighter does that for each of it's characters. All that said, I'm an open minded person when it comes to these sort of things and I take everything with a bit of salt and I go with it to see what happens. I am truly curious about this.

(note: I do believe, though, that Sakura should have a more grown-up outfit and had the School Girl outfit as her Alt. It just makes more sense than a girl in her 20's running around in something like that. Honest, one of my few and only complaints.)

Now for the reason of this post. I just have a few concerns with the liberties that the latest Street Fighter movie has presented. And yeah, it is a whole new medium and needs to be taken care of differently than a game or Anime. But don't take away from it what makes Street Fighter unique and turn it into just another Action Flick that can have the names changed of it's characters and no longer have anything to do with SF in whole.

Some liberties need to be taken with Street Fighter of course. It doesn't make sense that a Cop would be running around in that kind of Chun-li Qipao and the like. So yeah, there are some things that would benefit change to work in the real world. I like a few things that are going on in this Street Fighter Movie. Like Balrog/Bison/Boxer for example. It's true that a guy in baby blue gym shorts wouldn't inspire much fear until he's pounding your skull into the wall 9 feet behind you. His look should reflect his role and his role is the muscle for M. Bison and his organization. But you shouldn't omit this outfit completely. Fans can still be happy if they see the boxer don his baby blue's when he's in the gym working out and it wouldn't be too far of a stretch if something big happens and he would have to go as is. And then in the process of the fight, rip the shirt off as well as the gloves ( and I mean actually show his raw power by ripping them off, tearing away the laces and splitting the whole thing in half). But that's at most, at the very least a cameo of the outfit while he works out.

Now M.Bison/Dictator on the other hand, should keep his look with as little change as possible. His red suit can go darker. The metal shoulder and shin guards can be more hidden, altered or even maybe omitted. Walking around in this kind of clothing would still give off a sense of power from a crime boss with a superiority complex. The hat could still be fun when he goes out.

So now one of the bigger things that bother me. Completely changing a character from what they should look like. The character Gen in the upcoming movie is moving further and further away from the game character by being a middle aged man with little to no physical characteristics iconic to him (reading the directors note's, I can understand why but the character is who he is). At the very least give the man a beard and have him in his late 40's or early 50's. And maybe when he fights and starts using his assassin's instincts, show it by turning his eyes white. And that can go for any character that has white eyes in the game. They can get into a state of awareness or use a certain attack that just focuses them into a state of complete perception, alas the powers of the characters will be delved into later. But for now the characters appearance should really invoke in the people an idea of, "Yes, I know this character" or if they never seen the game, once they look at the character in the game they can instantly compare them to their movie counterparts. It is this kind of association that would move this from just another action movie. But there is one more thing beyond appearance that makes these characters who and what they are, and that is the moves and powers that make them true Icons.

In the same way it would be stupid to take away the powers of Superman or Spiderman, you shouldn't take away an iconic trademark of a character from a video game.

Some change would be needed to make it feel real but it is core to the SF universe. In Street Fighter, fighters from all disciplines appear with skill beyond compare. But much like Superman or Spiderman, you need a base for these things to rest on. Superman is an alien from another planet, infused with power by our planets sun. He can do things no other person can do and we believe he can do it because of his past. Spiderman was once like everyone else until a genetically mutated spider bit him and granted him proportionate power of that spider. Do we stick our noses in the air, say "impossible" and walk out of the theater? No. We know it's not possible but we believe it for the sake of the movie. This shouldn't be a double standard with video games. As long as there is a grounded bases, no matter what it is, it gives a reason for why these people can do what they do. And for Street Fighter, that reason should be a growing awareness of what the body is capable of doing and these street fighters, people devoted to their craft, can do impossible things because they're tapping into a power within us all to manifest energy visually, or with a boost of physical prowess and speed. The Governments of the world take notice of this and want to replicate these kinds of powers within their soldiers with only a few of them being naturally gifted. The same goes for M.Bison's ambitions. He wants to find/create/grow these kinds of individuals so that he can reign unopposed as a world power. With this base, would it not be believable to see Ryu use a hadoken? Or Blanka create electricity? Or Dahlsim breath flames and stretch his body? Granted the presentation of these powers need tweaking to look realistic and natural but the base is still there to allow the person watching this to understand whats going on. "It's not just these people, there are others out there like this and this is only a story of these few".

Like I said before, some powers need to be changed a bit to be more understandable. Like the Hurricane kick of Ryu, Ken or Chun-li. Spinning like that just kinda looks silly if you ask me. Even more so if it was shown on the big screen. But if their kicks would switched as they spun, like Dan's or Sean's kicks do, then you could keep the spin without it looking to idiotic too keep your disbelief. Dahlsim's stretchy arms can be done in a way that would make it look stupid as well. The way around this? Make it more of a quick, snapping motion. Don't move  the arm slowly across the screen and when it retracts, show the tightening of the muscle and the sound of the bones popping back into place. Remind the people that there is bone in there, not that he's made out of rubber. And lastly, Chun-li's kicks or Honda's hand slap. By only keeping these attacks limited to short bursts of speed, it can also be kept in a "real" sense. Keeping all these things in mind when showing the character can keep you in that open minded state that accepts these things as true and not over the top.

Now, again, I understand that it's a movie. Movie's are handled differently but much like any other source to movie adaptation, if you change it too much, you'll alienate the fans and even make it unacceptable to the masses. Changes need to be made and the number of characters in a book, comic or anything can present a problem. I agree 100% that a Street Fighter movie should be more focused on a few characters because of the size of the cast. But you know, much like what marvel has done with the Hulk as it shows another major character, even for a moment, it still an awesome moment. And it sets up something bigger. You don't have to include every character into this movie, but hinting at characters with mention of just a quick split second shot of the character in the background on the t.v. can mean so much to so many.

Well, these are my thoughts. Do you agree, disagree or just plain don't care? I hope at least someone does.
