Wii's Demographic

Anyone care to share their opinions on what they feel the demograhic is? I believe it's people who grew up on the NES and SNES. Late 20's early 30's group. I can see why new IP's struggle on the Wii. Take a look at what some of the best selling games on the Wii are. Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros's Wii, Super Mario Galaxy and Legend of Zelda TP to name a few. Young people under 18 I don't believe care about these games as much as people 20-30.  I think kid friendly and family friendly isn't exactly the Wii's demographic.

I think Nintendo meant for Wii's demographic to be all inclusive. Take a look at their ads. They don't show once specific age group playing their system. They show all ages.

I support a classic RE Franchise Reboot. Just say "no" to online multiplayer!

Mostly everyone. But it's likely hardcore gamers thrive on 360 and PS3 because Nintendo doesn't release enough suff like Mario, Metroid, Star Fox, Kirby, Kid Icarus, Zelda, and so on.

The system was designed to target non-gamers, but it doesn't mean that hardcores won't play the Wii.

I hate the term "hardcore gamer" and "hardcore games". The reason is because I find most of the "hardcore games" to be anything but! In a "realistic" war shooter, hiding in a corner shouldn't heal you! It's sad! No, hardcore is 3 lives, no continues, one hit and your dead! Hardcore is "Crap! I don't have enough ammo, and I don't have any health items left, there's no way I can fight the last boss...my entire playthrough is borked! Now I have to start over!"

Play Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising on Hardcore mode then we'll talk about pain...

A preface rant.

I've had a storied realationship with the Wii. When it was announced I hated the idea, it just screamed gimmick. The they showed some games in action at one of the E3's prior to its release and I flipped to thinking it was actually a pretty good idea. I then bought one and thought wow this is pretty cool. Then I got an HD set and was like ouch, then the  good games dried up the piles of shovelware started clogging the racks. (double ouch) Pretty soon I had nothing to play, nothing to look forward too and heard nothing but arrogant rumblings from the Big N who suddenly seemed far more interested in making more consoles then making more games. Suddenly my "cool" little white box wasn't so cool anymore. In truth I have only recently bought a new game  for the system (the first in a year and half) and there is but one more on the horizon that I'll be getting in the short term, after that a large black void of nothing. Am I bitter? No, am I dissapointed yeah kinda, am I amazed at how Nintendo could take such a great idea and barrel roll it off a cliff with no support? You bet.

In any case the Wii targeted its core crowd  and basically non gamers. Most "Hardcore" gamers I know can't stand the Wii (myself included now) the people I play with play games for hours on end, enjoy high end graphics and robust online support. The wii isn't at all friendly when it comes to any of the above. I can't fathom anyone playing a Wii game for 15 hours straight, (yes I have done this) connect the Wii to anything with the words HD on the box and the result is eye bleeding ugliness, and while it offers online play Nintendo is only about 15 years behind the curve in terms of user friendliness. Like I said I have a Wii but only for the one or two exclusive games that come out on it a year (if I'm lucky) and to basically kill a half hour here or there with. When I want to get my game on I fire up my 360 or (to a far less extent) PS3.

People can like what they want. If you like what the Wii offers and enjoy it then by all means enjoy it, but just because its sold like hotcakes doens'nt make it a winner in my book.

The Wii has World of Goo.  It did as much for the Wii, as Geometry Wars did for 360.

I played Geometry Wars for about 5 minutes. Take from that what you will.

Considering I've been playing games for 25 years, I think that I most definitely fall under the category of "gamer", and I spend more time playing my Wii than my 360.
