A final Fight game with RPG elements like Castle Crashers would be awesome.

I agree that role playing game elements would add excellent game play depth to a beat'em up game.

I imagine a good beat-em-up being something you could beat in an hour to a few hours but is so deep and full of content that you'll still be playing it for months. Think River City Ransom EX.

^ Or Shadow Over Mystara.

I love Beat em Ups but unfortunately they rarely do well in this day and age.  I haven't checked out Castle Crashers yet but I've heard nothing but good things about it.  Also, Dungeon Fighter Online is really good and worth checking (especially since it's free).

I also wish Million or whoever has the current rights to Technos Japan's old Catalog would begin releasing some new Double Dragon, River City Ransom and Sports games.  I miss those dudes.

I think anyone interested in making a good beat-em-up may want to look at some of these games for ideas.

Maniac Mansion (NES) – different paths to take and different ways of beating the game. Also has more than one "Good" ending, unlike other games that are more linear and have canonical "Best" endings along with non-canon "Good" and "Bad" ones.

River City Ransom – 1) you have the ability to customize your specials and in the GBA version, even change the appearance of your sprite; 2) you could play straight towards the last fight or you can dawdle and go through all the subquests.

Half-Minute Hero – I haven't played it, but the idea of having a game you can play through within a day and yet be as deep as a straight RPG is an interesting one. Could be good for replay value.

Double Dragon/River City Ransom – every good brawler should have more than one attack button. What, no jump button? No problem. Just press Punch + Kick at the same time. Also, the special move commands in both games translate well into 3D, unlike with Street Fighter/KOF.

Peace Keepers (Rushing Beat Shura)/Final Fight 3/Sonic Blast Man II – super-damaging special attacks can be a lifesaver in tight spots

Final Fight 3 – SFII-style command specials in a 2D beat-em-up? Why not? Don't forget to allow the player to walk backwards without turning around.

Golden Axe III – multiple paths to take. Not two playthroughs are the same.

Godhand – customizing your normal punches, kicks and combos can be fun.

Dynasty Warriors 4 – can your actions determine who your final boss will be?

Metroid/Castlevania (SOTN, Aria of Sorrow) – a good world format for 2D beat-em-ups. Lots of areas to visit and tons of items to collect, most of them you can't get in just one playthrough.

Final Fantasy X/X-2/XII – a good world format for 3D beat-em-ups. Same as with Metroid and Castlevania.

Dynasty Warriors/Knights of the Round/King of the Dragons – ability to level up and acquire better weapons? Sure.

Dynasty Warriors – ...just don't expect to reach the highest levels or the best weapons in a single setting.

Dynasty Warriors/River City Ransom/Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross – ...however, every item or level you attain can or will be saved and carried over to your next playthrough.

Metal Gear Solid – tons of easter eggs, anyone?

Soul Calibur III/IV – insane amount of appearance customization options.

The humor throughout the game may not be for everyone but for a example of a good modern beat'em up, its perfect in that regard.

Hey this is a cool thread you made.

I most definately want a final fight game to be made.  Cool cut scenes and a great advancing story.

It's too bad that spyborgs did not do so well cause it's thought of as a beat'em up.

OK first order of business.  Capcom's next beat'em up.  Should it be 2d or 3d.

I was thinking of both where you can flip the perspective like paper mario.  What do you think of that?

I think it should stick to the 2-D gameplay format.
