The title pretty much explains it all. What's your favorite movie/movies that you love and would recommend others to see. Its through these type of recommendations that I found perhaps my favorite movie to date so I figure why not start a thread.

Tiny update: Heres a link to IGNs review of the Blu-Ray release... 9/10 not to bad.  http://bluray.ign.com/articles/941/941003p1.html

SERENITY: Available now on Blu-ray and DVD!!!

First let me admit that I'm not a big movie person. I don't go to the theaters unless there is something I really REALLY want to see which recently hasn't been anything and as a result will often wait for most movies to hit Pay Per View or DVD... That said if you've read my blog (and bless you if you did) you'll know that I recently watched a movie called SERENITY on DVD, and was gobsmacked by how good it was / is. It came out in 2005 so its a few years old, and wasn't a huge box office hit, but that's by no means an indicator of it's quality. In fact I'd argue that far to often movies get caught up in the hype and end up just delivering more hype. You watch it, it entertains you (or doesn't) for a couple hours and you go home forgetting about it. I'd even go as far as to say that most often its the movies that don't catch the mainstreams attention that are the real gems.

SERENITY is one of those gems. It was made for the fans of the show Firefly, because of the fans and as a result it feels genuine. There is a "thank you for the support" quality about it that is reflected in just about every facet of the film. In fact the people who made this movie are all genuine friends so this wasn't just a paycheck for them and it shows. The characters are "real" and lovable, the emotions tactile, the on screen chemistry between the actors, the delivery of the lines... it's all spot on. Seriously this may sound a little mushy but I got choked up numerous times while watching the film particularly during the scenes involving the mentally traumatized River Tam (played by Summer Glau) who you simply can't help but feel for. In fact Summer does River so much justice that I honestly don't think I've seen more "real" emotion from a character in a movie full stop. That's coming from someone who had prior to this never seen the show, didn't know who these characters were and had no reference's as to what was going on, but because of way the film was made and the actors played it out I got it and it hit home.

Rent, Buy, or Skip?

What a person likes is subjective of course, but I like to think I have good taste. That in mind even if you're not a fan of Sci-Fi you should give the movie a real chance as SERENITY is so much more than just another space drama. In fact the Sci-Fi part in my opinion plays a very small role as the real focus is the ragtag but lovable crew of SERENITY as they struggle to protect (sometimes reluctantly) this wayward girl (River) and dealing with the complications and dangers having her aboard causes them. Ultimately SERENITY is a tale of redemption, healing, sacrifice and family and says doing the right thing isn't always the smart or easy thing to do, but is worth doing regardless. It's just good stuff and is smart, funny, scary, sad and happy all at once, there's tons of action and drama to be had and plenty of heartfelt moments that new and longtime fans alike can appreciate. Okay sure it's not a Transformers like visual tour de force, (though it is visually appealing) and no it didn't have a huge 200 million dollar budget, but that stuff doesn't matter in this case. What SERENITY excels at and where so many big budget films fail is the emotion of the cast's performances, the smartness of the script and the fact that it tells a great story that is easy to get behind. I've seen a lot of movies that I can say I like, some that I can say I didn't, but very few that I can say I love. SERENITY is one of those movies that I love and is quite possibly my favorite movie to date.  Director Joss Whedon did a superb job with the film and it deserves to be seen. My recommendation is it's a BUY!

The Collector's Edition Box set comes with a lot of nice extras; deleted scenes, cast commentary and more.  SERENITY is also out now on Blu-ray and comes with a few more features on top of those found in the standard DVD release. The Standard, Collector's, and Blu-ray editions are available at most any retailer aswell as online.

Most of my favorite movies are horror.  If you like horror too or are interested you should check out Halloween (1979), John Carpenters The Thing, Prince of Darkness, In the Mouth of Madness, Night of the Living Dead (1968 and 1990), Dawn of the Dead (1978), Day of the Dead (1985), Dracula (1931), Raw Head Rex, Zombi 2, Demons 1 and 2, Fright Night and Evil Dead 1 and 2.  Other movies that I recommend that are non-horror include Highlander (1986), Big Trouble in Little China, They Live, Enter the Dragon, Escape From New York, Grandmas Boy and Old Boy.  These are just a few movies that I love.  Oh yeah as for anime Vampire Hunter D, Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust, Street Fighter The Animated Movie and Fist of the North Star.

Alright, I have to admit, I didn't think much of Serenity because it just didn't look like my kind of film, at all! It's not to say that I don't enjoy Sci-Fi movies  because there are some very rare ones that I do enjoy, but overall I won't look too into it.

I did have a friend tell me how good it was and towards the end convinced me to watch it. When I finally did I was impressed. I keep saying I'm going ot buy but some reason or another always comes up. Also, it's Joss Whedon, and he is the man. (Also ejoyed his run on Astonishing X-Men, but that should be for another thread)

I also need to add, as Dark said, it's more than just a Sci-Fi movie. The delivery in the lines are A+

Blade Runner an oldie but a goodie this one.

Any Science fiction fan worth there weight in salt has to have this movie in there library. Once again like Serenity above this is technically a Science Fiction film but the Sci-Fi takes a back seat to the characters and story telling. Its a visionary noir from Director Ridley Scott that I think much in the same way the Movie Aliens has shaped our perception of what a space marine looks like this film gave us a future that does'nt look that futuristic or idealic for that matter. The acting is great the design is amazing and to this day the movie piques my imagination whenever I need inspiration.

This movie comes in just about every format and numerous special / standard edition versions. Take your pick.

Clerks! It is an all time classic. A bit old now, but to me this movie is one of a kind. Yeah, it's vulgar and could probably offend a few, but the dialogue is smart, very witty and if you ever worked retail, well, you can relate to some of their situations. I'll see this movie from time to time. Not as much as I used to but this was Kevin's Smith best. Even the sequel was right along part 1, if not just a notch below. Funny!
