So, my girlfriends father and I have been playing RE5, and I have to say that there is definitely some weird, almost oblivious racism in there. I'm not saying that Capcom did it on purpose, but I think that Japan might be a little bit oblivious when it comes to African stereotypes.
1) Spear chucking Majini - the natives later one, with their swamps and traditional style huts just scream "dark continent" to me. The in game notes explain it a little bit, but how is it that a small village with a gondola, boats, modern clothing and contact with the outside world is still living without toilets? I found lots of toilets in Kijuju, so I know the concept was there. Also, the "traditional" warpaint that all the guys I am running into is a little bit ridiculous, as well as the bigger ones with the traditional masks.
2) THEY CAN JUMP REALLY HIGH! - when the first Majini jumped up onto a platform from the ground below (~15 feet), I just cracked up. That is ridiculous, and apparently there is a belief in Japan (a Japanese friend told me this), that black people can run faster and jump higher because their genetics make them better at it.
3) All the real bad guys are white - this just gives me the feeling that all the people in control around Kijuju are white. Where is this, South Africa?
The game isn't racist, but it is racially oblivious. I expected there to be some stuff that could be misconstrued as racism, but the later areas combined with the fact that the only important black character is Josh gives me the feeling that it could have been better handled.
It is a great game though, and I am loving every moment of it when I can ignore little insensitive moments of the game.
