Last night at an official press conference, Konami revealed that Snake's world was about to get a little more crazy with the inclusion of Monster Hunter! What sounded like an April Fool's joke became a reality as the above video was played, showing off Snake and his friends in the upcoming PSP title, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker as they take down Monster Hunter: Freedom Unite's colossal Tigrex and Rathalos with the help of Felynes.
According to Kotaku, who had writers on the scene:
These hunting sections, which appear to be separate from the narrative of the main sneak and kill game, can be played solo or cooperatively. The video shows Monster Hunter mainstay Felyne prancing about at some point in the game and it appears you can do other Monster Hunter-esque things like cook your kills and even use some of the weapons from the Capcom game.
Hideo Kojima has said that it makes sense for Snake to be hunting dinosaurs because the game takes place in Costa Rica.
Before you book your flights to Costa Rica in the hopes of doing some real life dinosaur hunting, please remember that a) he is probably referring to the evidence of fossilized remains or b) he's referring to the riveting documentary from the early 90s, Jurassic Park.
Update:
Konami has confirmed that this will also be available on the stateside release of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. 1up also gives some additional background on how the whole thing came about:
[This deal] has its roots in a Tokyo Game Show 2007 afterparty where Kojima and Capcom producer Ryozo Tsujimoto first met. The MH content is all Kojima's idea -- he officially asked Tsujimoto for permission in September of 2008, after he kicked off his involvement in the Peace Walker project -- and it's being developed wholly on Kojima Productions' side.
"If we had tried to organize this through our respective companies, I doubt it would've gone nearly as smoothly," he told Famitsu. (This isn't an unprecedented event, though -- Konami and Capcom worked together back in 2005 to link together Boktai with the Mega Man Battle Network series.)
For his part, Capcom's Tsujimoto is excited about the added exposure this tie-in allows Monster Hunter with the American and European audience. "It's true that Monster Hunter isn't that well-known a name overseas yet," he said. "That's why we appreciate this so much. They're really trying something new and interesting with Peace Walker, so if we can catch Japanese gamers' attention as well with this tie-in and get them to try it out, then I'm glad to help out with that."
What say you, Capcom Unity?
