    Ozwell E. Spencer revealed!

    Thursday, February 5, 2009, 07:23 PM [General]

    After twelve years since the release of the original Resident Evil, a key character in the backstory of the series will makes his first appearance.  Ozwell E. Spencer, the founder of the Umbrella Corp. and the man responsible for pretty much everything that has occured in the series, will make his first appearance in Resident Evil 5.

    In 1966, Spencer, along with his colleagues Edward Ashford and James Marcus, discovered the mutagenic agent known as the Progenitor Virus. Two years later, in 1968, the three men founded the Umbrella Corp., a developer of bioweapons camouflaged as a phamarceutical company and began researching the t-Virus and other bioweapons. After the Mansion Incident and the Destruction of Raccoon City, the Umbrella Corp. went bankrupt and Spencer was nowhere to be seen.

    Super Street Fighter II - Japanese vs. English ending comparisons

    Thursday, January 1, 2009, 01:13 PM [General]

    The localizations of the early Street Fighter games, as you may already be aware of, didn't exactly have the most accurate or faithful of video game translations. While most of the endings didn't diverge that much, in terms of the characters' backstories and motivations, two endings in particular, Fei-Long and Cammy, were translated in a way that changed their whole characterizations.

    Granted, the endings in the GBA version (Street Fighter II Revival) and the recently released Street Fighter II HD Remix, are somewhat more accurate to the original endings in the Japanese version of Super SF2, they also made quite a few revisions that still made them differ from the originals.

    So I've taken the liberty of translating the orignal endings for Cammy and Fei-Long from the Japanese arcade version of Super SF2. Here are the endings for Fei-Long and Cammy Cammy from the English version of the game for comparison purposes. This time, I'll be using the Japanese for the military commander of Shadaloo (Vega).

    Fei-Long's ending translated from the Japanese version.

    Director: "Well, well, well, that was splending!"

    Director: "Your technique are the real deal!"

    Director: "Surely, you must star in my next film!"

    Fei-Long: ...Sorry, but now I understand. My true passion is not acting."

    Fei-Long: "Its actual fighting."

    Director: "Surely you don't mean that... Just tell me the price and I'll pay..."

    Director: "H-hey! Come back!"

    The action star from Hong Kong vanished from the screen.

    Twenty years has passed...

    The "Sky Soaring style of Kung Fu" presently has over 3 million disciples.

    Since the morning of today,  the plaza has been crowded with recent converts standing before the memorial statue of the art's founder.

    "To be strict with oneself" Respected by all of his disciples, the name of this master was none other than..."

    Cammy's ending translated from the Japanese version.

    Cammy: "Vega, tell me the truth."

    Cammy: "What do you know...about my past?"

    Vega: "Very well. Three years ago you were a spy sent out on a mission by my organization."

    Cammy: "...!!"

    Vega: "It can't be. So you really lost your memories."

    Cammy: "You're lying!!"

    Vega: "You have no use for me at this point. Now leave..."

    Cammy: "What... will I do now?"

    Cammy: "Its you!"

    Delta Red member: "Our mission here is done. Now let's go home."

    Cammy: "But, I..."

    Delta Red member: "Your past is unimportant. What matters is the future! We're your friends, aren't we?"

    Cammy: "Thanks... Everyone."

    The soldiers returned home to their homeland, where their loved ones were waiting.

    Cammy (plus Rose and Gen) officially revealed for SF IV.

    Friday, December 19, 2008, 11:36 AM [General]

    Edit: Cammy's tag line is actually "a blow from a killer bee", which is what ichigeki means (a single strike). I just thought "sting" was more suitable than "blow".

    Edit 2: The "searching for Ryu" portion of Cammy's profile seems to be a copy and paste error by Capcom's website manager, seeing how the version published on Famitsu's website ommits that part.

    Street Fighter IV Project Manager Natsuki Shiozawa has updated her blog, along with the official Street Fighter IV, revealing one of the worst-kept "secret" about the game. Cammy, Rose, and Gen, have been confirmed as the final three new characters to be added. Of course, this information has been known for more than a month now, (perhaps longer), but now its officially official.

    Cammy "the sting of the killer bee" - A member of the British Special Forces Unit "Delta Red" who boast high attack power and speed. Originally a strength enhanced soldier brainwashed by Shadaloo, she has come to terms with her painful past and is now embarking on a new mission with her comrades.

    Gen "the calming assassing" - An assassin from the underworld who has become a legend. He continues fighting, seeking a worthy adversary for his "death match". He has complex feelings for Chun-Li, having had a deep connection with her father in the past.

    Rose "the card of fate" - A mysterious and beautiful fortune teller from Genova. She challenges Bison with her Soul Power, which transforms her spiritual energy into strength.

    Cammy has most of her special moves from Super Street Fighter II Turbo. She has the Cannon Spike (Front Kick), Spiral Arrow (Cannon Drill), the Axel Spin Knuckle, the Hooligang Combination, and a new Special Move called the "Cannon Strike" (essentially an aerial version of the Cannon Spike). Her Super Combo is once again, the Spin Drive Smasher, while her Ultra Combo is called the Gyro Drive Smasher, essentially the Spin Drive Smasher followed by a Frankensteiner. Gen's and Rose's techniques are yet to be revealed.

    "Ansatsuken" rant.

    Wednesday, December 17, 2008, 09:36 PM [General]

    I noticed a recent trend in the English speaking Street Fighter fan community. Particularly fansites, wikis, forum posters, and even bloggers on this very site, have use the term "ansatsuken" as it was the name of Ryu and Ken's fighting style. It even made it in a fanmade trailer for the American developed Street Fighter II HD Remix. This is incorrect and I will explain why.

    First, we must understand the meaning of the term ansatsuken (暗殺拳). Its a rather recent Japanese neologism that literally means "assassination fist" or "assassination art". The term ansatsuken has actually been used in martial arts related fiction. One of the earliest use of the term was in the 1980's manga and anime classic Hokuto no Ken (known in the west Fist of the North Star). The martial art style used by the main character, Hokuto Shinken, is described in the series as the "assassination art with only one successor" (一子相伝の暗殺拳, isshisouden no ansatsuken). The term ansatsuken has also been used in various other Japanese fiction. Avenger, the first installment of the Way of the Tiger game books was officially translated under the title Tiger Ansatsuken.

    "Naruhodo, kisama ga ano densetsu no ansatsuken Hokuto Shinken o tsukau otoko datta (I see, so you're the man who uses Hokuto Shinken, the legendary art of assassination)" says the Colonel to Kenshiro. The Colonel uses the synonymous term satsujinken (殺人拳, murderer's fist) to describe his own style.

    The term ansatsuken was first used to describe Ryu and Ken's style with Gouki's (Akuma) introduction to the series in Super Street Fighter II X (or Super Turbo) . To explain why Gouki used more powerful versions of Ryu and Ken's special techniques, a back story was developed which characterized him as the younger brother of Ryu and Ken's sifu Gouken. As you may or may not know already, Gouki and Gouken were students of Goutetsu, a martial arts master who trained the two in an ancient assassination art (or ansatsuken). Gouken, seeking to turn the fighting style from a murderous art to a sublimed martial art by refining the art's three secret techniques and removing the murderous energy (殺意の波動, satsui no hadou) they originally possessed.

    The term is used in relation to Ryu and Ken's fighting style, not as the name of a specific fighting style or school, but simply as a classification and ansatsuken and sastsujinken have both been used to describe his fighting style. Using the term "ansatsuken warriors" to describe the Ryu-type characters in the series, or listing "ansatsuken" as Ryu's fighting style is misleading for several reasons.

    Only Gouki actually uses the original murderous style, while Gouken, Ryu, and Ken, all use a sublimated form of the same style which Gouken developed. Ryu and Ken's fighting style is not actually a murderous style, but simply a martial art which has its roots in an assasination art, which is a big difference. Unless you count Evil Ryu of course, which is the version of "Ryu created from Satsui no Hadou who's gone to the dark side of Gouken's arts once used for assassination" as Card Fighters DS so elonquently put it. Even Gouken's official description for Street Fighter IV says as much.

    Ryu and Ken's master and Gouki's own brother. Refining the techniques which were once used for assassination (ansatsuken), he developed them into a first-class martial art, which he then taught to Ryu and Ken. Defeated by Gouki, he was believed to be dead, but has appeared once again.

    As you can see, Gouki's style was an "ansatsuken", but isn't anymore. The fact that characters like Sakura, Dan, and Sean, are all classified as "ansatsuken practioners" shows an ignorance of the term.

    The second reason why its misleading is because there's another martial art style in the series which has been classified as an ansatsuken. I'm talking about Gen's of course.

    The two fighting styles used by Gen in Street Fighter ZERO 2 (Alpha 2) are referred as ansatsuken sou ryuu and gi ryuu (Mourning style and Hateful style respectively).

    Even before his return in ZERO 2, Gen's martial art style was describe as an ansatsuken in his first appearance in the original Street Fighter, years before Gouki's first appearance in the series and the origin of Ryu's martial was established. So the term "ansatsuken warrior" is just as fitting to Gen as it is for Gouki. Its no wonder why these two were made into rivals in the Alpha series.

    So if "ansatsuken" isn't the official name of this Ryu's style, then which is it? It doesn't have one. Just like Yoda from Star Wars is a member of a nameless specie, the name of the fighting style used by Ryu and all related characters has never been given an official name.

    What about Shotokan Karate? That was merely a localization liberty in the instruction manual for the SNES version of Street Fighter II, just like how Dhalsim's fighting style was listed as Khabbadi in the same manual (Khabbadi is actually a sort of Indian version of tag). Oddly enough, the term shotoclone is still used despite that.

    What about Goutetsu-ryu ansatsuken? A completely fanmade term and misleading since it suggest that Goutetsu created the fighting style. However Ryu's win quote against Guile in the Japanese version of Capcom vs. SNK 2, as well Zero's pre battle dialogue in SvC Chaos, both suggest that Ryu/Gouki's fighting style was created during the feudal age in Japan, long before Goutetsu was even born (Zero's dialogue in Chaos was mistranslated though in the English version, and Ciel seems to suggest that Akuma himself is from the middle ages).

    The fighting style has no name and it doesn't need one. The fact that it has no name actually adds some mystique to its origin.

    Street Fighter EX2 Plus plot guide

    Street Fighter EX2 Plus plot guide ver. 1.0

    ==Disclaimer==
    Street Fighter EX2 Plus and all related characters and products are copyrights 1999 Capcom/Arika. The content of this file is for public domain and not for personal profit.

    ==Introduction==
    This is my translations of the official character profiles and endings. Like my Street Fighter EX2 plot guide, the character profiles are taken from Capcom and Arika's official sites (there's no difference between them though), while the endings are translated from transcriptions featured in the book All About Capcom Head-to-Head Fighting Game, which are actually taken from the Japanese version of the game itself. Like the previous Street Fighter EX games (including the original EX2), the English version of EX2 Plus did not feature the endings from the Japanese version. Instead, Arika went cheap and gives the player a generic "Thank you very much for your playing!!", which is to be honest, isn't really that much of a genuine gratitude.

    If the character profiles seem weird, that's because they're written in a rather psudeo poetic manner and the endings are also written in a similar matter. They probably make more sense in their original Japanese than they do in my English translations.

    ===Vega===
    Vega was deprived from using the new

    ===Dhalsim===

    "I'm home" She was greeted by a
    ringing telephone from within the store.
    Area picked up the nearby receiver.
    "The complete 'Khanser'? Alright,
    thank you for your purchase."

    ===Vulcano Rosso===
    Despite the fact he committed insubordination,
    Rosso accomplished his revenge. However, he
    was still greatly depressed over the lost of his
    beloved. His mind was now sleeping in an ocean
    without light.

    ===Sagat===
    These same words were always resouding in his mind...
    "Anyone who is strong must be defeated!"
    He continues to be motivated by this belief.
    A person like this is a true Emperor.

    ===M. Bison===
    "Ha ha ha ha! I've found a worthy specimen"
    "With Psycho Power and SH-11,
    a new power will be created... Huh huh,
    The birth of Neo Shadaloo!"

    ===Pullum Purna===
    Her curious pursuit was a trip without end.

    We're going to see space."

    ===Darun Mister===
    Darun obtained the opportunity to fight
    against the veterans of the world again.
    He knows he will flourish in the future
    as a result of this trip. For as long as the Princess
    lives, Darun will be really busy.

    ===Shadowgeist===
    "I fight to win" said Shadow as he vanished into the dark.
    Several days later...  A shadow appeared along with the moonlight
    at the back of the organization's building, shouting a loud cry.
    "Ha ha ha, I''m invincible!"

    ===Garuda===
    The demon who manipulates negativity.
    The demon whose form changes depending on who sees him.
    The demon who wanders through all eternity.

    ===Kairi===
    Kairi laughs with both hands dyed red.
    Hokuto's mind, body and soul, were torn.
    Anxious over the soul of the brother who never returned,
    Hokuto's pupils are quietly shut.

    ===M. Bison II===
    Note: Bison II is a CPU-only character. This ending only occurs if the player loses against him.

    A new world was born.
    A world filled with fear
    despair, and tyanny.

    ===Hayate===
    Hayate's body was trembling with memories
    of his father when he was young and a chilly
    wind. "If I can't do it..." With this words said,
    Hayate disappeared into the darkness.
