Mega Man: Dr. Wily’s Revenge now on 3DS Virtual Console

Sep 15, 2011 // Minish Capcom

It’s Thursday, and that (usually) means a new game for the 3DS Virtual Console. This week said game happens to be Mega Man: Dr. Wily’s Revenge , which originally appeared on the black and white Game Boy in 1991. Can he still be the Blue Bomber if he’s monochrome?

Part port and part brand-new-game, Dr. Wily’s Revenge takes pieces of the NES Mega Man 1 and 2 and combines them into one title. The levels are similar to their NES counterparts, but are not direct conversions; similarly, Wily’s Castle is a mixture of existing and new elements. It’s an interesting mix that is a must-see for Mega Man fans, as it’s both familiar yet bizarrely new.

This art is taken from MM3, so this actually borrows from THREE games!

I tried to get into this as a kid, but the combination of its ruthless difficulty and the Game Boy’s blurry screen turned me away. Now, the graphics are totally clear and you can finally tell what’s going on, making this the preferred way to play. Will you be able to conquer it? Only time and $3.99 will tell.

And if you’ve got 3DS cash to spare, Gargoyle’s Quest (starring Ultimate MvC3’s Firebrand) is on the 3DS VC as well, which is the first in a trilogy of games that culminates in Demon’s Crest for the Super NES.
