MvC Origins – Ryu, Lou and Siva

Sep 29, 2012 // Yuri Araujo

In the lead up to Marvel vs. Capcom Origins – wait, the game’s already out! Yep, you can dowload it on PSN and XBLA !

Anyways, we at Capcom Unity (along with our pals at Marvel.com ) thought it’d be fun to run through the roster and highlight each of the unique, memorable and occasionally insane characters. Since MvCO includes both Marvel Super Heroes and the original Marvel vs Capcom , we’ve got a lot of ground to cover – we’re handling the Capcom characters, while Marvel has its own write-up right here .

Today, we’ll scratch the surface of the one most famous fighting game characters ever, Ryu , as well as your favorite Three Wonders duo, Lou and Siva .

RYU

First apperance:  Street Fighter (1987)

MvCO appearance:  Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes

There is so much to talk about this fighting pioneer that won’t fit in this post… so I’ll just give you my impressions of what really defines Ryu’s character, and you can feel free to add your own impressions to the comments below, please 😉

First of all, Ryu pretty much defined what a well-rounded fighting game character should be. He sports that white gi, so you can see clearly see his moves; his movement and jump are just right; and his signature moves have been echoed pretty much everywhere else. From  Hadoukens to  Shoryukens and  Tatsumakisempukyakus (it sounded somewhat like “aputratruuuken” to me when I was little), it’s all so iconic now… and it’s all thanks to Ryu

On the “fighting spirit” side of things, he’s definitely on the top of the list. He started off by going on that world tour to test out his strenght (sent out by his mentor Gouken, of course) only to come back victorious and find out Gouken was (supposedly) murdered. Then he set out on the journey to revenge, took care of that, and went back to his regular routine.

What’s his regular routine, you ask… well, trying to prove himself as the strongest fighter in the world; just that simple. Now he took that task so seriously that he’s been tracking all sorts of tournaments (and BBQs )! He made his way into  every   Street Fighter game, as well as  every   crossover  game with Capcom. What do you say to that? huh?

LOU & SIVA

First appearance:  Three Wonders (1991)

MvCO appearance:  Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes

Lou and Siva are assists characters that came from the 3-in-1 game  Three Wonders . What’s cool is that they were 3 distinctly different games featuring the same main characters. How often do you see that nowadays?

Another really cool thing is how this was implemented in Marvel vs. Capcom. If you player selectes Lou as an assist, Lou will show up and shoot 3 arrows at the opponent – but where’s Siva? Well, for Siva to show up, both players have to select “Lou” as an assist. When that happens, Sive will the P2 assist character.

If you ask me, it was a very cool way to avoid the simple palette swapping and still show some love to both characters.

EDIT : I stand corrected – P2 Lou shows up with Siva’s colors, and not the full design – thanks to Unity member TheAnvil ,  who is obviously a big fan of Lou and Siva, judging by his profile picture. =)

Btw, I know Lou and Siva are some of you guys’ favorites, so share the love in the comments. Their stuff is also on Zazzle (which I found out today), lol.

Anyways, hope you enjoyed this series of articles… and now you can go ahead and enjoy Marvel vs. Capcom Origins! 😉
