Sony salutes eighteen years of PlayStation, throws nod to Capcom

Oct 21, 2013 // Chris

QUESTION : What was the first Capcom game you played on a PlayStation?

In case you’ve been gaming under a rock, the PlayStation 4 is nearly upon us and Sony’d like to remind us with a little tug to the old heartstrings. Here’s a wonderfully nostalgic little video featuring PlayStation through the ages, and it’s relevant to us because Resident Evil 4 gets to basically represent the entire PlayStation 2 generation. Awww, shucks… thanks, Sony!

While RE4 didn’t even debut on the PS2, one could certainly make the argument that it helped pioneer a new era of third-person (or over-the-shoulder) action games that would ultimately go on to define a substantial portion this generation’s titles, PlayStation or otherwise. In any case, I’m willing to bet many of you folks got your first Capcom fix on one of Sony’s consoles, and that made me wonder…

What was the first Capcom game you played on a PlayStation?! Mine’s a bit of a weird one:

Star Gladiator’s kind of a distant memory for me, but it’s certainly a fond one. Capcom had already made its name in fighting with Street Fighter and Darkstalkers, but this here gem was their first foray into the 3D polygonal fighter amidst the rise games like Tekken, Toshinden and Soul Edge on the original PlayStation. I have no idea if this unique weapon-based brawler holds up, but man, I certainly whittled away many a night clashing Plasma Swords (usually resorting to cheap ringouts against the CPU.) And oh man, dat arcade flyer!

So I ask you, fellow Unity members: Do you remember your first Capcom game on a Sony console? And can its art top a tyrannosaurus vomiting a laser beam?!
