    TOOLS OF THE TRADE

Gamers are being graced with a plethora of new fighting games for next generation consoles. The big question is do the consoles have the tools required to meet the demands of the competitive gamer? With Street Fighter IV making its way to PS3 and X360, gamers have started searching high and low for the best console controllers available. The ideal controller is a matter of preference for the gamer in question but can be summed into two categories: stick or d-pad?

Joysticks and directional pads have their own innate methods of input and require different techniques. Many argue that stiks are a professional, competitive gamer's tool of choice while others debate d-pads are more ideal for fighting games. Fact is, not everyone can use a joystick with precision and there are gamers who loathe using d-pads for fighting games. It's all a matter of preference and which controller a gamer can control best. Use whatever works best for you, regardless how much others may argue.

When both sides attempt to accuse the other of inadequacy, most of the time the complaints are nothing but a gamer publically voicing out their own handicaps. A single person's incompetence with a specific controller doesn't translate to the entire gaming populace. Just 'cause you have a problem pulling off a Shoryuken with a joystick doesn't mean everyone has the same problem. These obstacles can be traversed and overcome with practice and possibly implementing new techniques.

Through my experiences playing with and listening to many other gamers I've come to the conclusion more people struggle with the sticks than the d-pads (unless you're using the absolutely terrible Microsoft 360 controller's d-pad). The stiks require a bit (or a lot depending on the user) of training to grow accustomed to and most people I've met don't want to put forth the effort into learning how to use one. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this. Gamers have the right to choose which tool works best for them.

People will always argue which offers superior input so long as opinions exist. Your preference and style of play will judge which is best for you, however, the quality of components and brand of controller will have a direct effect upon input and the controller's longevity. Doesn't matter how skilled you are, if your controller doesn't work you're screwed. Luckily there are options with the next-gen consoles (stock and custom), and even those who want to stick with past console controllers have the option with converters.

Controllers are essential tools for video games. The quality of the controller and your mastery of controlling it directly reflect your gaming performance.
