The Starforce games are RPG's, as is Battle Network 5: Double Team.

You should try Megaman ZX and Megaman ZX Advent, it has the gameplay foundations of standard Megaman, a mix of shooting and platforming but it also incorporates Bio Metals (You can transform into the bosses you have killed and use their unique abilities) and a more open ended world (Just like any Metroid or recent Castlevania game).

My Megaman/Rockman collection so far: http://www.capcom-unity.com/shadowman16 *updated 10/06/2009*

I would highly suggest picking up and playing the original Star Force. Jumping in the middle of the series isn't the best thing to do. Unless you dislike how it plays.

Well, Mega Man Star Force is a RPG of sorts, but it probably isn't the best thing to play if you are looking soley for a RPG. The Battle Card system could take awhile to get used to, but people seem to enjoy it. Actually, the Mega Man Battle Network series (GBA) is favored over Star Force. There are a few Mega Man Legends cameos, along with some MMX characters. Of course most of the NetNavis from the game are based off of the Classic Robot Masters. Look into it if you want.

Star Force has some cool things too though, like WiFi battles and the Brotherband system. You can also level up and get new weapons. However it isn't based on the number of battles you do, battles just give you Battle Cards, Zenny, and sometimes items.

Yes, get MegaMan ZX and MegaMan ZX Advent. They're basically MegaMan X and MegaMan Zero combined with some extra awesome abilities like turning into the bosses and also some what of a decent story.

If you're looking for something like a portable Legends, then ZX probably comes the closest.  It plays more like X/Zero, but may have enough RPG-ish elements as Legends did to satisfy you.

As for Star Force, I don't think jumping in at 2 is of any real harm; I can't recall anything that really requires a knowledge of the first game in order to make it enjoyable-- not to say one shouldn't play the first SF, as that's a good game all on its own, and definitely helps build the backstories of Geo and his group of friends.  But storywise, they more or less tell you what little you need to know in 2 and send you on your way.
