Theme in MegaMan

Lately I have noticed that the most anime have an international theme other than Japanese like:

Bleach has a Spanish theme.

Katekyo Hitman Reborn has a Italian theme.

Even MegaMan shows a theme and I think it is Greek or Roman.

Like in most of the MegaMan series is that you acn find a boss or thing that who have a greek aplhabet symbol or letter as a name like:

Sigma from X:Σ

Omega from Zero 3:Ω

Alpha from BN3:Α

Epsilon from X Command Mission:Ε

Also from StarForce 2 there is a floating Continent in the sky and the final stage of MMSF2 called Mu:Μ

They even show the symbols in the game too.Any comments guys?

I agree that there are a lot of Greek letters, but they reminded me of code and mathematical formulas, not of Greek history or culture.  If they were trying to go for a Greek theme, I'd imagine they'd use the Greek gods as inspiration, which the series doesn't do often.

But it would be really cool if we could determine the cultural style prevalent through the Megaman series...Although wouldn't it just be rock and roll?

Havent you noticed that in ZX and ZXA that Greek gods names are used too like Promethius, Pandora,Aeolus, Thetis, and Atlas and Albert and Thomas are name of the 3 saints. Also all of the Models so far have letters that could be translated in the Greek Alphabet:

Like Model A=Α and α

Model X=Χ

Model Z=Ζ

Model H=Η

Model F=Γ

Model L=Λ

Model P=Ρ

Model W=ψ

Cool.  I only recognized Prometheus, Pandora, and Atlas, and thought they were stand alone references.

But I still don't see the Greek theme.  Were Prometheus and Pandora the only Greek references in ZX1?  They're names actually fit who they are, but does Atlas really bear the weight of the world on her shoulders?

I also thought that Model X's Helmet design looked somewhat Roman...I personally don't like it.

On the Greek Alphabet thing, isn't english simply an evolved form of it, or something?  Don't we all use latin script?  Why do you think the connection is to the Greek, rather than to our present state of technology?

On Albert and Thomas- they're said to be named after Dr. Thomas Light and Dr. Albert Wiley.  I'd guess that they share the names of saints because, well, those are common names.

I think Capcom of Japan or Keiji Inufune used Greek Mythology and legend to inspire the ideas in his games.

Also Aeolus is the name of a fake wind god in Greek mythology and his japanese name Helios is the name of a fake sun god too.

Atlas and Thetis are named after gods too but their genders are reversed.

Also Albert planned to become A GOD.Then the whole MegaMan King thing.

So I think the theme isn't about a particular cultural tradition, but about man reaching too far (to become a God, to rule of nature, to rule of hardship, etc.) In each Megaman series to date, I think it was man's latest achievement that its biggest threat--robots in Classic, overly connected networks, in BN, and Megamen in ZX.  In the ZX, the biggest threat to the world seems to be want-to-be heroes themselves.

I argue that Megaman's biggest influences has been Rock n Roll and heavy metal, where they also make references to various Gods and Mythologies.  Rock and Roll also has the dubious honor of forging cultural identity and spirituality when traditional forms of such were falling apart.  I think it's a very appropriate cultural theme for a violent and uncertain science fiction world.

Okay I dont what you said you but think about Starforce how the theme of the first game is Constellations and how Romans and Greeks were the ones who named the Constellations and the stars and the the were the first astronomers and the theme of Starforce is Astronomy.Besides I'm not talking about tradition more like history, folklore, and mythology.

(sigh.)  It's not your fault.  I'm just a bad writer.

[WARNING: Long Zero Series rant]

on a side note, I can tell you didn't play much of the Zero series, but most civilian characters there had French names, and I think there were a lot of Norse God theme.  In the Megaman Zero Art book, I also recall unused boss designs that were based on Japanese mythologies.  There was also a 9 tailed Fox, which I think is japanese mythology.

Also, there was Hanumachine based on Hanuman, and a elephant database that was based on Maha Ganesh, an Elephant headed diety, both from Hinduism.  Hanumachine was also a cross with the classic Monkey King, with an expanding staff.

There  were two beatles that may have been based on Greek Mythology, but I'm not sure.  (One of them may have just been based on the Hercules Beatle).  Leviathan was a Greek Influence, wasn't she?  Harpuria as well? (or was he just named after the Harpies?)

THere was an Aztec Faclon, too, and was that ice stag actually a Canadian Elk?  I don't think I can find a consistent cultural theme to the Megaman series as a whole.  it might make sense to look at each series separately.

[On the Starforce Thing]    sure they stuck to Greek Constellations in the first game, but then they quickly widened their focus to Medieval Knights, Ninjas, and Dinosaurs.  I think this last game has to do with gambling!  Megaman games have reached far and wide for their inspiration.  You say they're themed on the past, most others would say they're themed on... the future...duh(what with all the robots running about).

[on the Zero thing]    didn't mean to offend you, bra.  I just noticed you weren't using any Zero examples, that's all.

[AAand One Moore Thing!] --- Didn't you call me an idiot in another thread?
