I'm sure you already know but Bass and Treble's Japanese names are Forte and Gospel, two other musical terms that are present in English. Then there's Eddie, Rush, Beat, Tango, Enker, Punk, Ballade, and Blues (Protoman). I think I'm missing one or two more, as well.
RIP King of the Hill ;_;

Yeah, I like the joke lol.
Elecman took the place of "Paperman"
Paperman probably would've just been a office working middle aged man....bot

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Rockman a brand of guitar accessories, like guitar amps?
Anyways, on to something more relavent. I think the problem was, yeah, most people just automatically associate "Rock" with "Stone". And given the theme of bosses being named after their weapons, it would just cause issues, particularly with small children, which at the time, we all were.
It doesn't bother me either way. Though I think they should seriously stick with "Rock" as his original name, with "Mega Man" just being his once he upgraded. |

Yeah, Rockman fit with the Roll, Forte, Bass, etc. music theme the Japanese had going. Too late now, though. Mega's here to stay! |
