Evening!

So I play a lot of Runescape. A LOT. Something that has surfaced recently is something called the Iron Man Challenge - you have to play solo all the time with absolutely no cooperation (can be ignored very occasionally) from others. However, this is quite commonly the case in Monster Hunter, so I wanted to present my concept for the Monster Hunter Iron Man Challenge!

The rules:

  • Everything has to be done solo - no hunting with any other hunters ever, even on the Wii U!
  • All resources must be gained through the farm or your own gathering - no gifting from other players
  • You must only ever use one Weapon type. That's right, one. This is what makes the challenge an actual challenge, and you can make more than one of that Weapon type. For example, if you become a Longsword Pure, you cannot make any Greatswords or Dual Blades
  • You must not actively select a Charm table. This means that you could end up with the dreaded bad tables, but again, part of the challenge.
  • To complete the challenge, you must solo Dire Miralis
  • For bonus points, you have to have quest completion

I think it'd be a fun and interesting way to keep 3U rolling on and burn another 300 hours of challenge into it. Thoughts?

Uh, this is how I played the game just naturally.

I know other people who did this by buying the 3DS version, having no-one to play with, and not being willing to try other weapon types.

This isn't really a challenge at all.

A problem with only using one weapon type is hammers and hunting horns lack the ability to cut tails.  Tails are required to make a lot of armors and weapons

You could throw boomerangs, use the crappy weak HH handle hit, or nail monsters with a sleep weapon then have the shakas cut the tail with an artillery mask.

My main reason for saying this isn't a challenge is that only using one weapon is what people naturally do. It's pretty clear from every other guild card I've looked at.

It also has the advantages of meaning you only have to focus on a couple of armourskills and not needing to dabble in the ones that help other weapons and don't help yours.

Maintaining a balanced selection of multiple weapons and the assiociated armours and skills to go with them is considerably more difficult than what's proposed here.

This would be like someone saying "My Iron Man Mario challenge, is to beat Super Mario World start to finish...... BUT..... Hold the run button for the ENTIRE thing."

I'd say "Uh yeah dude. Doesn't everyone do that? Who walks in a Mario game?"

In both cases, its the fastest route to the end of the game.

Iron Man Challenge

Do not upgrade armor.

Do not use decorations (Talismans are allowed).

Evasion+1 or higher is not allowed.

Guard Boost and Guard +1 or higher are not allowed.

Fortify, Adrenaline, Guts, and Wrath Awoken are not allowed.

Slime weapons are not allowed.

Kitchen buffs are forbidden. You may not eat before a hunt. Other methods of Health and Stamina increasing are allowed.

Boomerangs and the Artillery mask can easily cut tails. Well, when I say easily I mean "if you can hit with them."

The better question is, if you thought you might need to cut tails, but were only allowed 1 weapon, why would you pick Hammer?

I disagree. You CAN cut tails with Hammer, Hunting Horn, and Bow.

That's not to say that you should or that it will be easy.

But it's supposed to be a challenge, no? Why should it be easy?

I agree with Deadeye Dave, as I also have nearly completed the requirements of this challenge.

I have pretty much soloed the game, except for some of the G-Rank event quests (Father and Son... ugh.  Double Savage Jho... ha ha, no thanks.)

And I did it almost all with Switch Axe, with Hammer as a fallback.

But that's been my modus operandi with every other Monster Hunter game I've played - familiarize myself with a particular weapon, use it to power through the game until end-game materials are available, and then branch out to other weapon types.

IMO, Switch Axe and Great Sword are most suited to this type of solo play, as their burst damage and good vertical reach allow you to easily cut any monster tail.  The tail issue is not as problematic as it was for earlier versions of Monster Hunter, as tails show up as capture rewards in MH3U.  Still, without tail cuts you are giving up chances to carve heavenlies.

No eating from canteen, shakas forbidden, one weapon type only, no talisman, feels like my noob days back in MHFU.

Um, guys? Any part that is "exclusive" to a tail carve or an impact-required break (ie Barroth's crest) can be gotten through the quest rewards.  It's been that way since at least MHFU. You don't NEED to use a specific weapon, ever.

This iron man challenger just looks like my 2nd char setup.

Dashing through the game with a SnS definitely felt easier than farming for all the weapons in parallel.
