Hi All,

Sorry for such a newb question.  I was wondering what is the basic steps to catching a monster?  So far I've just been slaying them.  What are the advantages of catching it rather than killing it?  Do you still get the parts?

This is the first time I've played MH.  I've been reading the hype and finally understand it.  It's great to see how deep this game is and how fun it can be with others, still looking for other people to play it with.

PS,
Any tips on beating the Pink Gorilla?

Think pokemon.

Weaken them to the point of near death, a good indication is they begin moving more slowly/sluggishly in their attacks, and they will limp if they get the chance.

Lay down a trap, shock or pitfall, and throw tranq bombs (tranquilizer+bomb material) at the monster.  2 should suffice.

They will not always show that they are limping, as they need to start their *walking* animation in a retreat to their lair, sometimes they will just keep fighting and fight to the death, in this instance, its really important to pay attention to how they attack, there is a *clear* difference in speed when they are weakened.

Alternatively, the skill *tranquilizer guru* allows you to *see* when they are weak enough to be captured.  Their icon on the minimap after being painted will turn from pink (normal) to yellow (weak), showing you when it is time.

As for the congalala, bring a fire weapon, beat em in the face, watch out for its gas, wait for a good opening and just let loose on the face.

when they're weak most of them will try and escape (limping) and then fall asleep in a cave somewhere thats your cue to set a trap under it and throw 2 tranq bombs, but hurry though they recover health when they sleep

BTW have you got a PS3? if you do you should get adhoc party

Edit: @bastion

i dont have unite yet but is there and armour set with both autotracker and tranq guru?

Kaiser,

No there is no armor set inherent with those skills, although, plesioth X has tranq guru AND trapper (forget the american name) which increases the rewards if the monster is captured.

It has plenty of slots, so you can just gem in autotracker.

thanks for the tips all!  I appreciate the help.  Whats the advantages of catching a monster rather than killing it and picking up its scraps?

I definitely need to practice the capturing.  Is this only for boss monsters or can this be done for regular monsters?

unfortunately I don't have a PS3, wish I did though.

some visual signs for certain monsters:

Kut ku:  ears lay down

Cephadrome:  Dorsal fin lays down

Plesioth: Dorsal fin lays down (note, when you break the fin, it will not lay down)

edit:  some random info i learned this weekend:  for the Capture-award on your guild card, if you transfer to Unite before you get that award, you need to recapture everything :(  took me forever to figure out i need another Cephadrome!  and i have a screenshot of my capturing them in MHF2...

Never really saw the benefit in capturing quite honestly..at least in MHF2.

Some items have better chances of being in the rewards if captured, but its barely worth it.

Now however...with the trapper skill...you get a METRIC BUTTLOAD of rewards.

Ex.

I did gold/silver grank, normally i get about 1 row and a half of rewards.

With trapper and capturing both of them, the ENTIRE reward box was full.

VERY worth it.

Though, I remember hearing a while back that its *better* if you capture a perfect monster rather than a broken one...like breaking rathalos's face/wings/tail will lessen the rewards if captured.

Never saw/found proof, so I'm not really sure on that.

Thanks for the input Bastion.  I guess I'll start trying to catch them when I have that skill you are talking about.

Bastion,

i like to trap when i have a full inventory.  carving means you need to have open inv space, which is as rare for me as a Gypceros or zhezu limp.

so, theres another good reason.

Ah, true, though if I'm ever short on space, I usually just replace it with an easily expendable item.

Potions, whetstones, anything really, even combo books.

Not to say capturing is useless, just I never saw a reason?

Be that as it may, Capturing certainly has pros/cons.

On one hand you *may* get better rewards, though you can't carve, so its basically a risk assessment, do you want the chance for more rewards?  Or play it safe and at least get some carves if nothing else.
