Street Fighter 4 Online and Egypt's Internet

    Friday, August 21, 2009, 10:30 PM [General]

It was past midnight and I decided to play a bit of Street Fighter IV online on my Xbox 360. It seemed like a good idea until I realized that I lived in Cairo with its horrible internet connection.

Here, I demonstrate how you too can pull your hair out by playing online games in Egypt. By the way, the internet connection I have (and all of Egypt has) is ADSL.

Starting A Video Game / Internet Cafe Hangout

    Thursday, March 19, 2009, 10:43 PM [General]

I moved to Cairo, Egypt some months ago and I brought my PS2, Xbox, Xbox 360 and Wii with lots and lots of games, controllers/joysticks, comic book/sci-fi/anime posters and I realized that I would really like to open my own video game / internet cafe hangout.

In Cairo, I've noticed that electronics (including gaming consoles) are really expensive and not everyone can afford them. So, there are little video game (of mostly PC games) shops for those who can't afford gaming consoles. The thing about these shops is that they look very sterile, boring and more like a dentist's waiting room than a place to have fun.

I would like to have a really cool, upbeat, fun and cheerful hangout for kids and young adults. For instance, I used to live in Orlando, Florida and every year, they would have an one-week-a-year event called "Otronicon" where they took a science museum and turned it into a HUGE gaming-console arcade and it was such an awesome place to be for gamers.

So, my question is: If you didn't have a gaming console and wanted a place to play games and hang out, what would you like to see in it and what would keep you coming back?

    For instance:

    - soda and snack vending machines
    - comfortable seating
    - big-screen TVs

    Thanks!

Message To Andrzej Bartkowiak and Capcom:

    Thursday, March 5, 2009, 11:53 PM [General]

The thing is that I know that with all the current and unused footage from this movie, the director and editor are able to reedit this movie into a much better and proud version. That and completely redo the kikouken because it looks like a college student's After Effects project that got a C+.

Kristin did an excellent job acting out the charging/manifesting and throwing of the kikouken. The actual ki/chi/energy ball looked so amateurish and anti-climaxing. I felt complete embarrassment for the movie's creators when I saw the kikouken hit Bison. It looked so generic.

Since I saw this film in a downloaded camcorder-rip file (the movie's not playing in Colombia), I was able to turn down the volume during Kristin's voice-overs. I completely got the gist of what was happening without needing the voice-overs. Unnecessary voice-overs makes the movie-goers feel like idiots and like we're being patronized. It takes away that "cool" mystery from the storyline and just lays it flat out boring.

There's a line towards the end of the movie where Chun-Li says "I've stood when standing was not easy...and have found something to believe in. Something worth fighting for...The Order of the Web." If she had just said something along the lines of "...the good people who need help" or "...justice" instead of "The Order of the Web," Chun-Li's story would have been canon and probably set her up for her being a police cop/interpol agent.

God, this movie could come to DVD & Blu-Ray in a reedited and enhanced version and it would become such a cult-hit for all the good reasons. I mean, there was no real effort on promoting this movie. So, they might as well make a last-ditch effort and reedit this movie and release it.

Movies are a type of art medium and I've learned that art that's put out to the world belongs to the world. So many people (fans and nonfans included) were rooting for this film to be so good. And If we are going to get an embarrassing piece of art...well, that just sucks.

As a hardcore Street Fighter fan with this movie in its current state, I would rather have had Capcom not make this film at all than to have seen this half-effort. It would have spared the "Street Fighter" franchise and the "Capcom" name the embarrassment and joke that is now attached to it.

Honest Thoughts on "The Legend of Chun-Li" Movie

    Wednesday, March 4, 2009, 02:12 PM [General]

I just saw the movie and I'm gonna be very honest and to the point.

I'm a huge Street Fighter fan. Chun-Li's my favorite character and was very excited for this movie. I've been all over this movie since casting.

I'm currently on vacation in Colombia and the movie's not playing in any theaters here due to the unbelievably horrible lack of promotion (thanks Fox). So, I downloaded a camcorder-rip of the movie and watched it.

My biggest complaints can be fixed in the editing and special effects processes.

    • Kristin Kreuk's voice-overs were heavily unnecessary.
    • Chris Klein's acting was amazingly over-the-top. Casting him as "Nash" was a bad idea.
    • Maya's character brought absolutely nothing to the movie except wasted time.

Overall, it was a very slow-paced movie with a lot of post-production messups.

This movie can still be really good but it would have to be reedited and re-promoted.

Unfortunately, I've learned that Capcom's ONLY good for video games and not when it comes to movies.

The movie was neither bad nor good. The idea of a "Street Fighter" movie was better than the movie itself.
