Resident Evil 2 playable on PS3 and PSP

    Thursday, November 19, 2009, 06:46 PM [General]

Resident Evil 2 is re-launching today as a digital download to the PS3 and PSP.  We’re talking the entirety of Raccoon City, Umbrella, and more, downloadable and playable on your Sony console of choice.  Imagine if we had the ability to take all awesome things and make them downloadable, instead of just awesome Capcom games.

For quite some time, Resident Evil 2 was the Survival Horror genre.  It brought chills to my spine, just like it brought chills to the spines of many others (Big shout-out to Mike for his 3-part RE2 recap here, here and here).

The story of this game belongs in a museum.  Zombies try to kill you, then you meet Ada Wong, there are some quite spacious sewers involved, Umbrella being evil, Rebecca in a basketball uniform, and then an unmentionably tense ending.  Release date be damned, this game almost made my top 10 releases for the decade.

If you’re excited about Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, but are Wii-deprived, know this: one of the best parts of that game is the inclusion of scenes from Resident Evil 2.  You know what other game includes scenes from RE2?  RE2.  Download it.

Mega Man and Darkstalkers on the PSN? Yes Way!

    Thursday, October 29, 2009, 06:06 PM [General]

News, everyone!  Today marks the beginning of a new era.  From this moment forward, Mega Man Maverick Hunter X and Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower are both available for download from the PlayStation Network.  PSP users can now get  both their fresh-classic Mega Man action and their sleek-hot Darkstalkers fighting action downloaded directly to their minds (Actually, PSPs and PSP gos).

The fresh and classic: Mega Man Maverick Hunter X is a remixed, remastered, re-awesome version of Mega Man X (a la the SNES).  When Sigma leads a group of Reploids in a revolt against mankind, it’s up to X and Zero to protect the world from ruin.

It’s still side-scrolling, but we’ve updated it with 3-D graphics, remixed music, and unlockable features.  If you like good games, this is one of them.  That’s what it comes down to.  Ask anyone who knows, Mega Man X rocks.  I almost failed my Discrete Mathematics test Sophomore year when it failed to have any of the Mega Man Maverick Hunter X I had studied the week before.

The smooth and sleek: Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower brings the elegance of vampires to a smooth, sleek fighting game.  Choose your character, then decide which of five different fighting styles you want, each of which heralds from its own game in the Darkstalkers series.

With a game like Darkstalkers, the attraction is simple: come for the characters, stay for the gameplay.  Succubus vs. Vampire?  Yeti vs. Cat-Woman?  These are matchups you have to see.  When you get your hands on the game, it actually proves itself to be a functional and sophisticated fighting game.  It’s like hearing a supermodel spout off on jab connectors and proper combo technique—it’s the best of both worlds.

And to think, you could have been playing these classic puzzle/adventure games while crowding around Seth at the Capcom Fight Club last week.  If only I had alerted you to their availability!

Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max on the PSN Store!

    Thursday, October 15, 2009, 11:02 PM [General]

Today saw the release of Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max on the PSN Store as a downloadable title for the PSP!  Anybody looking to get their hands on a full-featured, downloadable fighting game can boot up that brand new PSP go, or that old reliable PSP, and enjoy some high-quality action.

Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max really deserves its moniker.  What makes it so Max that we had to add that to the title?  The PSP version of the popular fighter features 8-player Wi-Fi tournaments, and a beefed up roster.  Furious battles and convenient connections? Exactly what portable gaming is all about.

Let's go one last time through the list of features:

    * It's a perfect iteration of an already robust fighting game (meaning that you're going to get the modes, stages, and characters you expect to have on a home console)
    * Ad Hoc Multiplayer (Beat down that smelly kid on the bus)
    * Customizable characters and HUGE variety of fighting styles
    * Dan

The game is known as the best fighting game on the platform, and even features the rare and beautiful Ingrid.  Check it out, available right now.

Celebrate the PSP go, Capcom style!

    Thursday, October 1, 2009, 05:20 PM [General]

For all of our early adaptors out there, I have another PSP digital announcement: we’re bringing both Monster Hunter Freedom Unite AND Capcom Classics Collection: Reloaded to the UMD Legacy program, starting today!

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is the latest in monster-hunting goodness, and has been the talk of this blog for some time now (Thanks Snow!).  It's got everything you expect from a Monster Hunter title: 4-player co-op, huge monsters, intense gameplay, deep customization, and high praise from reviewers.  This is is your chance to take your hunting on the go [LITERALLY.  HAH-ha.]

And Capcom Classics Collection: Reloaded? It comes with 19 arcade and console classics sure to satisfy the most discriminating of retro gaming connoisseurs.  Reloaded serves up a hearty spread of games, spanning almost every genre: vertical shooters, beat-em-ups, fighting games, and more.

The best part?  Everything in the game can be played with a friend.  Whether it’s versus mode, in games like Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting, co-op in games like 1943, or even turn-based in games like Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts, everything’s better with a partner.

CCC:Reloaded is a collector’s must-have, and comes with game music, galleries, classic illustrations, and gaming tips (you’ll need them).  What more could you want?  Check out the full list of games below:

    1.    1942
    2.    1943
