About Me: Been a gamer since 1985 starting on Atari 2600 and arcades. I worked for an Arcade when I was 16 doing solely machine maintenance and repair during what I call the last era of US arcades, the Mid 90s. I also own a few dedicated cabs as well. Capcom is basically my favorite game company because they proved themselves in the arcade and on home systems that they can deliver great titles, period.

CPSIII SFIII Giant Attack Kit Enroute

    Thursday, September 10, 2009, 12:46 PM [Arcade]

Got a CPS III system coming my way with SFIII Giant Attack. The Security cart has never had its battery replaced but it still working.

For those that aren't familar with CPS III. Alot of people usually stay away from these. There is a lithium battery inside each game cart that holds the encryption coding to the custom processor. If that battery dies, the encryption is lost and can not be recovered at all. This means you are left with a dead game and at this time can't even be revived.

Capcom Coin-Op is no longer. The company that bought them doesnt have the machine anymore to redo the carts. Apparently some guy, former Capcom Coin-Op or Betson has this machine and will not recover carts. However you can apparently buy the machine off him for $1M US....

This motherboard also has enough Simms (memory) to run 3rd Strike as well. I might attempt to replace the battery in the security cart, however to do this you need to have voltage applied while desoldering the old battery and replacing it. If voltage is removed in anyway or period of time. Congrats! you have a suicided cart.

Gotta love Capcom encryption... This was used so no one could make bootlegs of the CPS III games back in the day, however also is a ticking time bomb to kill CPS III down the road. One of my friends has 15 dead 3rd Strike Carts just sitting there in a pile. Just sucks for us Arcade Preservationists that are trying to keep original hardware games alive and running.
