Dark Void’s Humanity Blog #1: Pulling Back the Veil

Jan 19, 2009 // Shana

Pay no attention to the man behind the mask.

It’s a common theme in games today.  Wearing a mask, especially a metal mask, gives an instant boost to your coolness.  It designates you as the leader, setting you apart from the droves of would-be maskless heroes, who are now soldiers in your service.  It adds an immediate air of mystery and intrigue that effaces the need for a backstory.  Interestingly enough, it also might get you arrested in Tampa .

Dark Void also has a masked hero.  But allow me to pull back the veil…

William Augustus Grey.
That’s the full name of Dark Void‘s lead character, the quote-unquote “man with the mask.”  He’s 6-feet tall, 183 lbs.  He plays guitar and harmonica and carries the latter with him everywhere he goes.  He’s got two older brothers and a younger sister, who he hasn’t seen in a while.  So, Will has a name, a past, a backstory, and more importantly, a face.

Do you know this man?
Maybe not yet, but soon enough.

So, why the mask?
Imagine if you had two massive rockets strapped to your back and were blasting through alien environments at 300 mph.  A mask might not be the worst choice of accessories for general face protection.

So, you can see there are a number of totally practical reasons for said mask.

(And, of course, there’s also the coolness and the mystery thing too).
