    Rockman ZX fangame: demo release

    Saturday, January 17, 2009, 10:22 AM [General]

My first blog post ever, strangely enough I never joined in on the whole blog hype.

I might as well post something here which I posted on a few other forums a while back. I released a WIP demo of my fangame, Rockman ZX: Game of Destiny which is a fighting game featuring the Zero/ZX gameplay with ZX characters, Rockman vs Rockman.

The game features a Versus mode where 2 players can battle each other and a Free Play mode where you can fight a CPU enemy. You can also create your own enemies by recording yourself, either as an identical copy of yourself or by recording attack patterns, so you can fight against yourself or share your enemy with someone else so he can battle it.

For some videos you can look at my Youtube playlist here

    Known issues:

    - Arcade mode doesn't work yet.
    - Only the currently necessary sounds are included to keep the file size to a minimum.
    - Grey and Ashe still use the same sprite for now.
    - So far Model X, ZX, Z and A are playable, the others will follow later.
    - There is no giga strike yet.

    Instructions:

You can use the Options screen to change controls for player 1 and player 2 and to switch between windowed mode and full screen.
To record an enemy, go to Customize then choose if you want to record a ghost or a cpu character. A ghost is an identical recording of you playing, a cpu enemy has several attack patterns which the cpu will then use against you randomly. Then choose your character and the area.

When you record a ghost it will start recording your moves as soon as the battle starts. You can tell by the red °REC icon next to your health bar. To stop recording press the space bar.

When you record a cpu enemy, you'll notice a square around your character when the battle starts. This is a spawn point, you can only start recording when you stand inside one of these squares. Do a move, a few attacks or go to another spot and press the space bar to stop recording, you'll see a new spawn point appears. Now repeat this proces until you have recorded several attacks. When you fight against it, the cpu enemy will choose it's attacks randomly, moving from spawn point to spawn point while attacking. These moves/attacks are repeated indefinitely and randomly until either player is dead.
When you stop recording you'll see a window that the file is saved in the Ghosts folder, you can rename it if you like.

To play against an enemy you recorded, go to Free Play, choose the character you wish to play as, choose the character you recorded as your enemy, choose the area on which you recorded and you'll see a list of available enemy files. Choose the one you recorded (you can tell the date and time by the filename) and you can fight against it.

    Stuff you need:

Before you can play the game, you'll need the .NET framework (at least version 2.0). If you have Windows XP SP2 or Vista then you already have it and you can skip this. If you don't you can download the .NET framework from the Microsoft website here.

Next you'll need some C++ runtime files, it's not big.
Download them from the Microsoft website here or if that link doesn't work you can use this mirror.

Now the game itself, it's about 100MB with 2 mirrors.
