Spyborgs was among my least played titles at the event. Not because I thought it wasn’t up to par, but because of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Bionic Commando. Don’t worry though, I still got enough play-time to get a good opinion on it.

One of the most important things to take note is that many people who worked on Ratchet & Clank at Insomniac have come on-board to make this game work. Straight away you notice the Ratchet & Clank feeling, especially through the achievement system this game has. The cartoon flair and comedy value are also typical Ratchet & Clank. I knew I was in good hands.

The game is built around co-op, but single player reduces the partner to AI, naturally. However, it’s multiplayer where you get the most fun out of it. With the game basically being a brawler, it’s up to you and your partner to dish the dirt with a variety of combos and waggling. With waggling, you can set up finishers and combos with your partner, where you have to swing the Wii-mote in the direction stated on screen. Miss it and the combo breaks. Get it right, and watch the stylised finishing move.

You also have to collect XP points and there’s also a ranking system that appears on your screen, not too dissimilar to Devil May Cry titles. In-fact, I could smell some form of Devil May Cry inspiration in this, just without the massive amounts of depth.

Graphically, the game has changed a far bit, but the style works for the sort of game it is. The guys handling the presentation stated that this won’t be like a cheesy Saturday morning cartoon, and that they are just going with the flow with no real rating in mind. Good way of putting it indeed.

Overall, Spyborgs looks great, especially with the Capcom sauce in terms of giant bosses fought multiple times etc. Personally, I’d definitely consider it as a purchase, but would need to play more to get a definitive feel. There were instances of repetition, especially only being able to play as two characters with very little upgrading accessible. However, there is a massive amount of potential and I can’t wait to play the full game.

Underrated? Definitely. Spyborgs could be one of the most enjoyable two player brawlers for quite some time.
