The reason why I pick Ken is just in case there's an Akuma user.I'll just shoryken through the air fireballs cuz that's the only way for me not to get owned.

I use Ken, so as the rest of the characters. I'm guessing that Ken is favored over Ryu in popularity because of his overall speed, various of special kicks, and knee grab setups.

I choose ken so i can knee bash the **** out of people.  Ryu has no such hold.

I believe Ken is favored because his DP is so dominant and is arguably the best reversal in the game. Also due to normal lag, is very hard to counter his jab DP if he spams it repeatedly. Add in the kneebash cycle possibilities and his faster speed among the shotos and it's easy to see why he's used more, or at least seems to look like he's used more. I would think so. Ryu has a much stronger fireball game and controls the horizontal while ken's DPs are clearly faster and have further reach so he controls the vertical game. His DP is also the best counter to Akuma's air fireballs. I tend to play Ken when I don't want to work as hard for my wins as I do with Fei Long, since it's too easy to spam DPs all day and kneebash people to death. But overall, Ryu is the superior fighter and Akuma is arguably still overpowered. In the right hands, anyway.

I think the reason there are so many Ken players is as was stated:

Knee Bash, and his dragon punches.

The most underestimated move is his fierce dragon, it controls a ton of diagonal space. I have done some serious surprising shots to people with that. And I don't use him very much.

He is the popular shoto probably because most people like upclose fighting (imo ken is better at) rather than fireball fighting.  His jab dp is pretty safe and noobs like to spam it all day thinking they could get away with it.

He was my main guy until hd remix was released.  I couldn't take anymore boring mirror matches.
