Ultras force people who are winning to play smart. I think the revenge meter is a great way of keeping players on their feet. It creates a whole host of new situations that make matches exciting and calculating.

It creates a whole host of new situations that make matches exciting and calculating. play "smart"? by that you mean cautious. another word for that is playing safe, meaning not using allot of high risk moves and tactics. but why would the excitement and calculative aspect of the game be diminished without ultras? what your saying is that this high payoff comeback feature makes the game more mentally interesting. why? it makes it more turtlish which means LESS. if I know that my options are limited by the probability that one mistake will cost me the match I am going to play total runaway, turtle or what ever. in other words I am going to play defense. but that's not the real issue here. your talking about the idea of a comeback feature adding strategy via safe play at the end of the match, where as I am talking about HOW that comeback feature should be gained and HOW MUCH of a comeback you should have. the idea of FA absorbtion charging ultras ONLY is good because it intigrates the FA's and ultras and most importently there is risk in gaining the ultra but a reward if you do, unlike the current system. |

You can really only land ultras if your opponent makes a big mistake, or if you have a really good set-up. If you play smart, then you can get people to miss their ultras, or keep yourself out of situations where you can be hit by an ultra. I get why don't like them, and thats cool, but I don't think they ruin the game by any stretch of the imagination. Having a meter build up from taking damage or by using focus attacks is just SFIV's evolution of super meters. I didn't like how everyone started with a full meter in Alpha 3, and it seemed kind of silly that you could just whiff pokes to build meter in SF3, so I'm happy with this new incarnation of the super meter.

I just got my way up to 1000+ battle points owning all the Ryu and Ken scrubs using Vega :p I found a nice trick, select Vega as quickly as possible, and the usual shoto scrub will think 'LOL Vega, how easy, go go go Ryu / Ken', and then I just rofflestomp them by backfplipping out of everysingle fireball and shoryken attack, including both of their super and ultra combos :p Vega is the bane of shoto characters once you learn how to use him, but now my thumbs feel like they are bleeding after getting up to 1000 points :( I hope I get to fight more Ryu / Ken players. Backflip to safety and attack with flying barcelona / rolling crystal flash to wear them down. Immediately after each attack spam backflip. If they choose to follow you, punish them with Scarlet Terror. If they stay away and shoot fireballs, Backflip through them and follow up with Flying Barcelona Special or EX Sky High Claw if your power bar is full enough. Timing everything perfectly though will kill your hands and needs epic vega skillz. I need to learn how to fight with him close up as well, right now I just use the really cheesy closing in with Rolling Crystal Flash, followed up by crouching Fierce punch and Fierce Slide, rinse and repeat. When Blocked, cancel Crystal Flash into a Focus attack, follow up with slide. It is super crazy when people get trapped by it, if they manage to escape it, go go backflip and Flying Scarlet when they follow you lulz. I have difficulty against E. Honda an Blanka though, those matches just turn into a charge attack spam fest. E. Honda in particular can trump every one of Vegas attacks with his, With blanka it is a case of trying to outsmart the player by mixing attacks so he doesnt know what to expect. Vegas Ultra also has a high tendancy to fail because the opponent often falls outside of its wall jump arc, and the super combo is really hard to pull of because after the input you need to fly into touch range of the opponent to pull it off :(. Instead, I use my meter up on EX Sky High Claws that fly straight yhrough everything. All of his attacks followed up by backflip are much too fast for opponents to react to them with more then a block, and if they do try to counter you, they fall prey to Scarlet Terror. But pulling it off faster then they can reach you, and timing it to hit is difficult.
Also, I dont know how to beat Zangief and Akuma. Good players with those two beat me easilly, Zangief now just steps through everything with that green hand move, and closes in far too easilly. My backflips get me to the wall too fast :(. If I stop to attack in close range, I fail.

I like that idea it make sense and your right it makes people play defensive the rest of the match and keep running away and i hate that. Its always a Dhaliam player that does it cuz of that same old fireball teleport behind you move and then when they get you down its so hard to get near them because of that teleport man. like I think its one of the hardest things to defend in the game. but anyway my point is they play like that is so boring and ridiculous to me its the same as when you have akuma players thrownig fireballs THE WHOLE match. |

This thread is quite amusing. Ultra meter = turtle play only? Yes, lets forget how damaging supers can be in other SF games and how much faster they are then Ultras. That and the ones that give you more than one super meter or a meter gauge that fills up faster than Ultras. From now on, if I lose because I got ultra'd, my excuse is because it's for noobs and broke through my turtling when I was winning. lol
