Lesson: Don't blindly use your Ultra
Don't do your Ultra on wake up Don't do your Ultra far away unless you're sure it connects from that distance without too much time for your opponent to do anything. etc.

Definately the best time. But it generally depends on the situation. You just gotta practise and learn really. Some Ultras can be countered just with a special move. Example: as Zangief trying to do his just as you're about to get off the floor = "Tiger Uppercut" Problem solved. |

It also depends on who you are using and who you are facing. For example, I have been hit with Ken's Ultra, and I am pretty sure Gief has picked me up out of mine before as well. I usually only do my Ultra (Ryu) as a counter when I play Bison, Cammy, Rog, for example, and then the distance has to be right. For like Bison, if I do it to close I will still get hit by his legs, and since that hits me first and if my power is that low, then I KO before my ultra finishes him. Same with Cammy and her legs and Rog with his EXTREMELY long fist. If possible, I will usually jump, dash back first then Ultra, if they have given me that much room to do so. I usually only Ultra on wake-up or counter when someone is doing a normal or special move right in my face...then I lite them up.

I like to do the step back Ultra with Ryu against Bison's headstomp. THEY HATE THAT!

I know the trick to that, you have to be really good to actually get me with an Ultra during my headstomps. But at first when I started getting Ultra'd by Ryu with it I was like wtf? It really is a wake up call lol :D

Just input the command during their Ultra animation and hit the buttons a couple times as it ends. You generally just want your Ultra to come out right away as the invincibility frames are generally right in the beginning of your Ultra, but it depends on the Ultra and the distance at which the opponent is doing it. Keep in mind you can counter with anything that has invincibility frames, which generally means quick EX moves, and in rare ocassions, the back-dash. Some Ultras won't work as counters for others, also. You can counter a lot of ultras on block with raging demon for instance, but not as a counter. And Abel's ultra will whiff underneath things a lot.

Ryu's ultra used as a reversal will get you killed a good 70% or better against some characters. Don't ever try to psychic Ultra Guile's booms or Sagat... It can get UGLY in a hurry!
