Why is it that Dee Jay never caught on?

I used to be a Guile exclusive, but when Super II came out I started using DeeJay.  With the latest release I'm favoring DeeJay, but I notice that he never caught on.  Why?

Probably because he's the worst character design ever. He doesn't appeal to much people and is probably the least popular sf character. Srk love him because they're hardcore and like his playstyle, I guess.

I would have to dissent with that. Neither character is horribly designed and the fact that you claim he is the least popular is not true. We already have someone that favors him and it doesn't mean he is not "hardcore" like any other character. Now some characters from the original "Street Fighter" can be considered as having the worst designs, like Joe for example; regular clothing, no special abilities and fights like an average "Joe".

I wouldn't say "Worse" design but I don't like him, sure he fights in a hardcore play style but he doesn't appeal to me at all. I feel lifeless using him, not the same kind of vibe I get using Chun-Li, Ryu, any other character lol.

Well, the characters in 2 that don't appeal to me to the point that I wouldn't even care if they are in an animated movie are.

T. Hawk,DeeJay, Balrog, E. Honda, Zangeif(Was good but his story gets him beat by R Mika? he is a joke character now), I think that is it though. I forget the rest.

I only "use" Chun-Li and Ryu seriously, I use Cammy and Feilong to fool around. Street Fighter is a game with characters I can be a fanboy of and connect with them in some way, if I wanted crap characters that look the same, I would play Tekkin(hides).

SF4 Mains: Chun-Li
BlazBlue mains:Noel Vermillion,Litchi Faye Ling and Taokaka
I love Chun-Li and she defeated the Metal Gear with Snake!

He doesn't appeal to anyone. Alpha characters were made to appeal to a certain fanbase and sf4 characters were made to appeal to everyone. So this is why i'm saying he has  a bad character design. I should remind you he's pretty much hated all around, having been made by the US office at the time.

Joe and any other characters from sf1 don't count. They've been dead for 22 years and most don't even know about them, so why bring that up.

I was a big fan of Dee Jay and enjoyed using him. I thought he appealed to people rather okay, but me liking him shows a bit of bias

Well, I like his moveset.

His design doesn't appeal to me, but I don't hate it either and at least he has a personality, which is more than can be said about a lot of video game characters.

I only brung Joe from "Street Fighter" up to present horrible character design and Dee Jay does appeal to some but that doesn't mean as you have stated "he doesn't appeal to anyone".

more from plot guide-

Fun random fact.  Dee Jay is the only SF2 character (and probably only
SF character ever) designed by Capcom of USA.  When Super Street Fighter 2
with four new characters (Cammy, Dee Jay, Fei-Long, and Thunder Hawk) was
made, Capcom of Japan made three of them and Capcom of USA made one, Dee
Jay.  ...this might explain why Dee Jay is the least developed SFZ3
character (little incentive for CoJ to develop the storyline further for a
character they didn't design).

A post to the gamefaqs message board by James Goddard, the man
responsible for designing Dee Jay.

That is true. Capcom had sent us pics of the 4 new challengers. There was 2
fei longs (head swaps). I felt this was bad for the players and asked for a
shot a creating a real 4th. They let me try and after watch King of the
Kickboxers with billy blanks (yes the tai-bo guy before he wore tights!!) I
got the idea. I sent a real rough/crappy sketch. They sent back a good one.
I did a final kickass one from theirs with the hairstyle and such, and
pitched it in Japan. I cannot remember the artists name but he made it
happen. I have read stupid threads in the past about how I am not a good
artist, the joke is I never said I was an artist! LOL! I draw cartoony
stuff. I get to co-create characters in this biz because I am able to write
the background and pull out the characters feel/motivation, etc. do a lame
sketch when needed and work with great artists to collaborate the end
result- with them nailing the look! I think deejay is fun, so even though
he is not critical to the sf storyline, he has tones of potential!!
