Top Five Video Game Music Companies

    Wednesday, March 18, 2009, 08:11 PM [General]

Here, I'm going to give my personal opinion on video game music. But instead of the usual lists where they name composers, I'm going to be naming video game developers who release said music. This entails multiple composers per company.

    5. Sega

Sega is here mainly because of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Lots of other Sega games have good music, but Sonic is the series that stood out to me. Ever since I heard Green Hill Zone for the first time, I've been in love with the music from his games. And now that Sonic's games aren't as good as they were back in the day, the music still shines. Now if Sonic Team could just get a good Sonic game right...

    4. Konami

The main game that put this at number four was Silent Hill. The eerie tunes of the game helped set the mood of being alone in a town full of fog and ash, psychopaths, and monsters. But they're also responsible for games such as the Metal Gear series, featuring Harry Gregson Williams in MGS2 and beyond, as well as classics like Contra.

    3. Nintendo

Ah Nintendo. Responsible for the most memorable tunes in video gaming history, such as the Super Mario Brothers theme and The Legend of Zelda theme. But it doesn't stop there. Throughout the years, Nintendo has delivered excellent music for all of their games. Most recently, their games Twilight Princess and Super Mario Galaxy showed that they still had it in the music department. And the the classic, new, and rearranged tunes in Super Smash Brothers Brawl was a compilation of epic proportions.

    2. Capcom

This one's a no brainer. I don't think I've ever played a Capcom game that had music that wasn't good. Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Bionic Commando, Duck Tales, Mega Man. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. From the days of the NES to their most recent release, Resident Evil 5, Capcom has been spot on with grade A music.

    1. Square Enix

I'm sure everyone predicted this one. It was hard to choose between Capcom and Square Enix. But ultimately Square Enix took the number one spot by a hair. Of course we have the Final Fantasy series. The title song (sometimes called Final Fantasy. And no, not the prelude) is my favorite song in the series. Plus we have the Kingdom Hearts series and various other games. While Nobuo Uematsu is no longer exclusive to Square, he still does music for them from time to time, and the music he's done is legendary. Also for Square they have the rising Yoko Shimomura, who has done music for the Kingdom Hearts series, and the upcoming Final Fantasy XIII: Versus. Top it off with their orchestrated concerts, and some rock rearrangements from Nobuo Uematsu himself, you have one hell of a library of music.

So there we go. Those are my top five. Disagree with me? I don't care. This is my opinion, not yours. But if you have an opinion, post in the comments!

    Capcom is hurting my wallet!

    Saturday, February 14, 2009, 12:41 AM [General]

I guess I have more to say than my previous blog post had in it. Now I'm here to talk about the financial strain Capcom is going to be putting me in over the next couple months.

First off, we have Street Fighter IV, only days away. I have been salivating over this game for months now, even more since I've been playing tons of Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. Well, right there is $80, because I'm a guy that has to have the special edition of a game, unless it's really really not worth it, and this one is. Plus I might be getting one of the control pads or sticks (not the TE one though, too expensive), so that's another $40-$60. Might wait on that though, since I've gotten used to the analog stick on the 360 for SF2.

The first Resident Evil I've really played was number three, back when my brother and I first got our PlayStation, and he was too scared to play RE3 because of Nemesis (lol). Ever since I played RE2 a few months after, I've been hooked. So of course I'm looking forward to Resident Evil 5. Although I'm not entirely sure if I'm going to get the special edition or not, but either way I'm getting it.

Then it's looking like there won't bee too much until May, or at least I think it's May. The month Bionic Commando is listed to come out. I've been looking forward to this game since the preview video in Rearmed. And then even more after I beat Rearmed. I'm honestly surprised I've never played Bionic Commando until Rearmed came out.

We also have Chop Til You Drop out this month, but I think I'm going to pass on it, at least for now. But, we have Dead Rising 2 to look forward to! No idea when it's coming out, but I know I'll be buying it on release day. I'm a huge fan of the Dead Rising series. It's my second favorite zombie game, next to Left 4 Dead. Heck, the news of DR2 made me pick up the original again. Just today I unlocked the Mega Buster (again) and started a new 72 hour campaign to play through all the way to Overtime.

So there we have it. Thanks Capcom for taking my money, but thanks even more for making such awesome games.
