A few weeks ago my sister posed a question to my 6-year-old nephew … “Do you want a Star Wars backpack for first grade?”
His response: “No, I want a Street Fighter backpack!”
It makes sense that the request was then thrown to me. I asked licensing. I asked our store team.
Nothing.
At this time we don’t seem to have an official Street Fighter-branded backpack.
I decided to make my own.
First off, I got a sturdy Jansport from Sports Authority. From there, I kicked around some ideas on how to bring the Street Fighter flavor to a boring backpack.
I got some Ken and Ryu Puzzle Fighter patches from Darin, the awesome guy who runs our company store. I also had some extra red headbands left over from the Street Fighter IV campaign.
With a basic premise, I took the bag, patches and headband to the talented Miguel at Townsend Street Tailor.
They added the patches to the front pocket. Instead of ironing them on, they removed part of the front pocket to sew them on with a special sewing machine. First graders are rough.
I had the idea of sewing the headband into the bag around the top. The tailor, a Street Fighter fan, suggested that I sew in a knot on the side to flow like Ryu’s headband. Genius!
As you can see, the bag turned out fantastic.
But it had one last step before it was ready … Comic-Con.
Mr. Street Fighter himself, Ono-san, signed the bag.
It’s currently on its way to Florida.
What do you think? Should we make a Street Fighter backpack like this?
