In the lead up to Marvel vs. Capcom Origins , coming September 25th to PlayStation Network and September 26th to Xbox Live Arcade , we at Capcom Unity (along with our pals at Marvel.com ) thought it’d be fun to run through the roster and highlight each of the unique, memorable and occasionally insane characters. Since MvCO includes both Marvel Super Heroes and the original Marvel vs Capcom , we’ve got a lot of ground to cover – we’re handling the Capcom folks, while Marvel has its own write-up right here .
Today, I’m filling in for Brett and Greg , who are both in Japan, so let’s quickly review everyone’s succubus Morrigan and Donovan ’s mysterious little companion Anita , both from the Darkstalkers series.
First appearance: Darkstarlkers: The Night Warriors (1994)
MvCO appearances: Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes
I get to talk about Morrigan?! What a responsibility! Well, I probably don’t need to say much since she’s definitely a fan favorite and everyone on the internet knows about her. After all, there are probably 2 or 3 Capcom games that she HASN’T been in; lol. In all seriousness, she has a huge game portfolio. She’s been around in every Darkstalkers game, since the very first one, and managed to show up in nearly every Versus game with Capcom. Heck, she even made her way into Cross Edge ! And, there are “Morrigan outfits” in We Love Golf! and the Japan-only Monster Hunter Frontier Online .
So, Morrigan Aensland is to Darkstalkers as Ryu is to Street Fighter . She’s always the one to represent the Darkstalkers series in other games, but unfortunately she’s never been considered Top-tier by most people. Although…… in Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 , we’ve seen stuff like THIS . Call it “lame” if you want, but please make it to the EVO Semi-Finals before you say anything else, ok? 😉
Did I tell you there’s a secret in which you play as Lilith in Marvel vs Capcom? No? That’s why it’s a secret.
First appearance: Night Warriors: Darkstarlkers’ Revenge (1995)
MvCO appearances: Marvel Super Heroes (Japanese port only), Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes
Funny thing: Anita is actually the only Capcom playable character in the Japanese version of Marvel Super Heroes . Was she really that popular in Japan? The answer is “not exactly”. That’s not why she’s in the game actually. Anita was just a test character that the developers decided to leave in the game after they were done (Funny how things happened in the ’90s). In the original game, you’d have to use a secret code to select her; now all you have to do is beat the game a few times and gather enough Vault points to unlock her from the in-game shop.
Anita uses Donovan ‘s sword Dhylec for most of her attacks and occasionally calls in an Akuma sprite for an attack or throws tons of doll heads at the opponent as a Super move, dealing up to 98 hits! In the move from Marvel Super Heroes to Marvel vs Capcom , she got demoted to an assist character. Or should that be promoted to a “real” character rather than a test? Anyways, as an assist, she comes in, points at the opponent and a bunch of random projectiles fly their way – and that’s all you need to know.
One more thing: she’s probably one of the few orphans in the whole game that is not part of the X-Men 😉
Thanks to this awesome site for the in-game shots of the assists!
